In the second season episode “what kate did” Eko is talking to Locke in the Hatch, and begins telling him a fantastic biblical story, this isnt verbatim but here goes my attempt to quote the story

In the latest episode, Cabin Fever, Richard Alpert gave a young John Locke a test with riddled with implications, those of which i will not attempt to understand or explain quite yet.
However one of the five items that Richard laid on the table was the ole familiar Book of Laws. We’ve heard of this book before on Lost. I caught it because it was mentioned in my all time favorite scene on Lost.
In the second season episode “what kate did” Eko is talking to Locke in the Hatch, and begins telling him a fantastic biblical story, this isnt verbatim but here goes my attempt to quote the story
“Long before christ the king of judah was a man named josiah, josiah’s kingdom was in dissarray, and his people began worshiping idols, false gods, so josiah told his treasurer to retrieve all of the kings gold, with this gold they would pay workers to rebuild the temple, when the treasurer came back to Josiah he had no gold, but told josiah we found a book, it was the Book of Laws, you may know it as the old testament, and it was with this book, not the gold, that josiah rebuilt the temple…John, when we were on the other side of the island we found a place much like this one, and in it, we found a book” of course the book ecko found was the missing reel to the orientation film.
Now what this implies i do not know, i could’ve sworn that Alpert almost flinched when john focused on the book of laws, i think that it was the book which john was supposed to choose. And lets be honest, Ecko’s analogy was very dramatic, and Lost doesnt mention things for no reason, and they especially dont mention things (the book of laws) twice for no reason… let me know what you think

Shasty, excellent I’m pretty sure you are the first to mention this. This is fantastic, I am really interested so I got the actual quote from Eko. (All of the transcripts are available on Lostpedia.com)
EKO: Hello. I have something I think you should see. If you don’t mind, I will begin at the beginning. Long before Christ the king of Judah was a man named Josiah.
LOCKE: Boy when you say beginning, you mean beginning.
EKO: At that time the temple where the people worshipped was in ruin. And so the people worshipped idols, false gods. And so the kingdom was in disarray. Josiah, since he was a good king, sent his secretary to the treasury and said: “We must rebuild the temple. Give all of the gold to the workers so that this will be done.” But when the secretary returned, he had no gold. And when Josiah asked why this was the secretary replied, “We found a book.” Do you know this story?
LOCKE: No, I’m afraid I don’t.
EKO: What the secretary had found was an ancient book — the Book of Law. You may know it as the Old Testament. And it was with that ancient book, not with the gold, that Josiah rebuilt the temple. On the other side of the island we found a place much like this, and in this place we found a book. [Eko unwraps the book and pushes it toward Locke] I believe what’s inside there will be of great value to you.
You’ve got me interested, Shasty!! Thanks for the information!
so wait was the ACTUAL book on the other side of the island the same book alpert presented to young locke?
Good observation. +1
Awesome! Now I want to go watch that again…. +1
BensGirl, no, the book that Eko found was a normal Holy Bible.
Top class Lost referencing, Shasty. I never made that connection at all. Love it. +1
Awesome!
I agree…if they mention it twice, it’s probably not coincidence. Great catch!

Shasty, excellent catch. +1
This is the best evidence I’ve heard yet to support the idea that young Locke was suppose to have chosen the “Book of Laws.”
I also like the analogy that when young Locke chooses the knife, he’s choosing “free will” over “destiny” at this point in the story. Obviously, his point of view changes in time, but Jack’s hasn’t.
The story Eko quotes comes from the Bible. II Kings 22 and 23- the temple material here may be pertinent to our island’s temple. +1

tr41c, i do somewhat agree with your biblical theory. It seems that Jacob is surrounded in biblical references. How Locke plays into all this i’m not sure, there are too many unanswered questions. Locke could be replacing ben as the next messenger of Jacob, or he could be replacing Jacob, maybe Christian Shepherd already replaced Jacob. I wonder if we’ll ever know.
On a side note, i sometimes worry that the producers have not dug themselves in too deep of a hole, but dug themselves too many holes. There’s the Jacob mysteries, the dharma mysteries, smokey, where Widmore really stands, is there time travel, are Aaron and Walt still special, how is Paik involved, will Jack stop being such a pansy, whats the deal with Alpert not aging. Too many unanswered questions.
I agree with you Shasty. It will take genius on the part of the writers to both explain and then tie all of this together in a satisfying way. It is much easier to ask questions than to answer them. But even if they fail they’ve made us all think and they’ve given us one heck of a ride!
