This is my idea about Bens manipulation of getting Karl and Dannielle shot to keep them away from Alex:
So i think it goes back to when Danielle first captured Ben. At this point as well as finding out more about the Losties, Ben also finds at some extra information, the crazy french woman who he took the baby from is not collorbarating with the survivors. So, in his mind straight away there is a pawn that must be eliminated because working together they could potentially ruin some of his plans, or even find some way of getting Alex back. With Ben only really having Alex as what he would come to regard as his family, this can not and must not happen.
Around the time before Ben’s capture and certainly after, Alex is also having some fun with a young lad called Karl. ben wasn’t particulary bothered about Karl, until he started slipping his daughter one. Ben knows that although he can brainwash him, punish him, banish him, that they are young and will alwats find a way of being together. But Ben knows this could lead to Alexs death. So know, Ben realises there is another pawn that needs to be eradicated. But How?
I propose that Ben banishes Karl because he knows that he will end up staying with the survivors, that ultimately an allegiance will be formed with them and Danielle, that through certain turns of events, mostly as we have seen on the show orchastrated by Ben will lead the three, Danielle, Alex and Karl together.
ben allows himself, probably even manipulates it so he gets battered all over the place by the losties to appear broken and finished. Something that will come into play later
Ben now, as we have seen is amongst the three, albeit as a prisoner and wants to go with Locke ionstead of staying with Jack. Ask yourself why. If i were Ben and i knew the 4 who were coming to the island, and were not particular threatening, i would stay with Jack and manipulate them. But no, he chooses to go with Locke. Im sure there is manipulation on his part to do with Locke, but also, he wants to be around his daughter. Remember the way Ben said “Karl, if your going to sleep with my daughter then you should call me Ben” when they were trekking back to othersville. The expression and tone of voice was very patronsing, and the face had a hint of menace. I think Ben knew what was going to happen, even at this point!
Then, Ben tells Danielle Alex and Karl to go to the temple. Hang on, isn’t Karl banished, why does Ben care if Karl is killed in the onslaught? Well, he doesn’t, so now the opportunity has arisen to to wipe out his 2 pawns, Danilelle and karl in one foul swoop. Alex is captured, but who now is the only one to save her, her Dad, thus coming across as the good guy once again and winning abck her daughter.
I know this sounds like a long winded way of sorting things out, but that is how he plays this game!
Anyway, not wrote a theory for a while on here now, so im probably a little rusty!
Damn… I just posted a very similar theory without reading this first — yours is much more thought out as well! +1
I think that Ben sent Alex, Karl and Danielle off so that Alex would be captured and the other 2 would be offed. It’ll be interesting to see what he has in store next.
DS, Very nice to see you back, and especially with such a great theory!
I have heard both arguments for it being Ben’s group who attacked and good arguments for it being “the freighties” who attacked. I was starting to lean more towards “the freighties”
You have made such a convincing campaign as to why Ben wanted to take out Karl and Rousseau that I am inclined to agree. It is indeed plausible, especially knowing how obsessed Ben is with Alex, and Ben’s personality being of such, that he would never let go of anyone or anything he viewed as his sole possession! Great job! +1
many thanks, not been around for a while, glad to be back!!!
Hope the trolls have stayed away!!
DS, +1 and welcome back! Not rusty at all, great theory.
boybacon, I just read yours and before this and gave you a +1 too.
good theory. the only thing i dont agree with……..i dont think Rousseau is dead. I think she still has “work to do”….
Nicely written, DS, But I hope Danielle is not dead,it sure would seem a waste, after she survived as long as she did, and finally got her daughter back. +1
I know what kitterkatters is saying — killing off Rousseau doesn’t seem right; her story doesn’t seem to be finished quite yet.
