If there is no mind-shifting forward, then Mrs Hawking interfered with Daniel’s demonstration!
— JacksEyes
A lot of people are saying that there is no forward (into the future) mind-shifting in Lost. If that is the case then I would like to look again at the Eloise maze experiment.
Just so you know where I am coming from, I believe that somebody on the Isalnd is mind-shifting forward, maybe at random, and can therefore say with certainty that X will survive until Y, because he has seen him/her there in the future. But back to Eloise. If (and let’s try to get this right) her future self did not mind-shift back to her (ie she did not “see into the future”), then how could she run the maze. These are the answers, I came up with. 1) She had already run the maze and Daniel was lying when he said she hadn’t; 2) She had already run the maze but Daniel didn’t know she had. 3) It was a very easy maze. 4) Fate; What was the main object of the exercise? Answer: to convince Desmond that the mind-time-shifting thing was scientifically possible, so that his mind would be more accepting of what was happening to him and therefore be more receptive to the idea of the constant. So what about our possible answers. 1) Daniel sets the whole thing up because he needs Des there in the future as his constant. He has been told (surely he didn’t tell himself) that Des will come and he is ready. I don’t like this. 2) Somebody else teaches Eloise how to run the maze without telling Daniel. This could mean someone (Ben/ Jacob) from the future mind-shifting back - no way. 3) No. 4) Fate!. It is not unreasonable to think that the timeline-menders stepped in to guide Eloise (and killed her afterwards - boo!) in order to stabilise Desmond and later convince him of the need for a constant. It was essential to them that he press the button but at this stage on the island he has already done so. Note that Mrs Hawking and Brother Campbell were photographed in the same courtyard as Daniel met Desmond! (Some say Charlie was there too with Liam, but I am not going there!). This is all about Des in the future learning these things. The only answer I am happy with is 1) Fate. Mrs Hawking steps in order to convince Des in the future of his need for a constant. Both Des and Daniel in the past then need to completely forget abot the incident and carry on as they always did to avoid any paradox. I will compromise and allow them a bit of a nagging déjà vu memory for dramatic effect, but that’s all. Conclusion. If there is no mind-shifting forward (and I think there is), then Mrs Hawking et al interfered with Daniel’s demonstration on that day and Des and Dan then immediately forgot all about it, and, importantly… Des still has work to do!

Technically, Desmond’s consciousness was jumping forward in time, not backward. It was his 1996 consciousness that was jumping into his 2004 body. That’s why he didn’t know who Sayid was or even where he was in 2004.
well, if 1996 Des can jump to 2004, why can’t 2004 Des jump to 2012? (or anyone else who is time-shifting) We’ve seen no evidence of this yet, but the writers do hit us with surprises now and then that seem to change the plot.
Jacks you have touched on an issue that is very important, all the information about Daniel’s time travelling experiments that we have come from the 1996 Faraday. His experiments and his knowledge at that point in time are those from someone just at the early stages of experimentation.
How more advanced and different are these experiments with another 6-8 years of researching and experimenting. It is possible that in the years after 1996 Farday discovers a way of sending something more than just consciousness through time. We need to learn from Faraday the state of his experiments and his results circa 2004, and not just take his 1996 research as final and absolute.
