Since the Others seem to be very purposeful, what do they aim to accomplish with these “projects”?

— Veefre

When Karl is rescued by Kate and Sawyer from the Pala island, he tells them that the Others are engaged in various projects.

When Richard Alpert has a little tete-a-tete with Locke while Ben is trying to push Locke out of a leadership position, Alpert says that the effort to solve the pregnancy problem should be abandoned in favor of “more important” projects the Others have going.

So just what are these Other Projects?

Clearly the Others have taken little interest in pursuing most Dharma Initiative projects. They didn’t man the Pearl observation station; they gave the Swan wide berth, and they used the Flame simply to gather intelligence.

They did have a presence in the “cages” and fish tanks in the Hydra Station on Pala, but there were no sign of the animals and sea life that Dharma was experimenting upon.

We did see Karl getting brainwashed in Room 23 at Hydra, and we see that Walt was being “tested” in the same room, resulting in mysterious bird deaths.

So I’m thinking these Other Projects were centered upon paranormal stuff like ESP, telepathy, spoon-bending, consiousness time travel, and last but not least, manipulation of electromagnetic fields.

Since the Others seem to be very purposeful, what do they aim to accomplish with these “projects”?

I hope the “others” purpose on the island is revealed soon.

I think its waaaay too early to start guessing at this question. We have alot of other matters to figure out first. But I like your train of thought. We can only speculate at the moment about these “other” projects. But I like the remider that there is dissension in the ranks of the “OTHERS”. I want to give you a “+” but im holding it back because of the prematurity of this question. (sorry Veefre) Not just yet.

Premature? That seems to be the only way to give birth to hopes conceived on the Island ;-)

Anyway, I will push on regardless.

There are a number of non-canonical theories out there that might help to explain the Others’ purpose, and hence their “projects”.

One, is the nefarious plot by Mittlewerk to release a virus to kill 30% of the earth’s population, and thus change the core values of the Valenzetti equation. I tend to discount this not because it is so bizarre, but because the Others have shown zero interest in the core values or the equation. And they don’t seem to care a whit about the rest of the world, other than what it can bring to them.

Two, is the idea that the Others have been on the Island for a very long time. This, coupled with the ancient looking ruins of the four toed foot and the big pile of rocks with a hole in the middle, brings up all sorts of ancient mythological possibilities. These options being endless, we must somehow narrow them down using whatever clues the series has thrown our way. One theory I kind of like is that the Others are really the gods of ancient Greece - or rather those humans who harnessed the earth’s electromagnetic anomalies to appear to be gods to less mortals. In this sense their “projects” are efforts to regain their god-like powers, and all that implies: endless life, absolute power, total happiness (although the Greek gods seem to have more than their share of dysfunction).

Time will tell (flashforwards notwithstanding) if this theory holds any water.
