This is a classic Lost blooper

— Veefre

In episode 2-20, “Two For the Road”, we get a fairly good look at a front loading washer/dryer set inside the living quarters of the Swan station.

This front loading washer dryer set is most certainly a relatively modern set, such as a Kenmore HE3T. These did not come out until about 2002, long after the Swan station was built, equipped, and left with a skeleton crew.

I very much doubt that such a laundry set could have been air-dropped to the Island intact (the washer alone weighs over 200 lbs) and then Desmond would have had a very difficult time lugging the appliances inside.

So I think this is a classic Lost blooper - putting a modern front loading washer/dryer pair into a vintage 1970’s set.

But at least one thing is realistic. I don’t think we ever see the Losties using the set. The first Kenmore HE3T machines were notoriously unreliable, so perhaps the fact that the set is not used lends an air of realism that partially offsets the huge timing error.

Maybe Ben’s magic box brought the 2002 model to the island. LMAO!

heres what me and a friend of mine can deduce about this:

Kelvin was in the Hatch at the time this washer came out, we can assume whoever put it in probably didn’t buy it the day it came out and rush it to the island, but even about a year after Kelvin still would’ve been the one in the hatch. We know he went outside and looked around all the time because of the blast door map, and well, seeing him do it. Its very possible that Ben saw one day that the buttons weren’t pushed in time, or saw Kelvin outside the Hatch, and spoke to him. He was a military man. If Ben approached him as someone in command of Dharma, Kelvin most likely would’ve followed said orders. Ben may have asked him if he could do anything to make him more comfortable, as he already knew Kelvin had discovered that he could leave the hatch and walk around. Maybe he divulged some information to Kelvin, and they became friendly enough that Ben tried to help him out with new appliances.

Im about to post a theory I just thought of. Thank you for sparking my mind

That’s rather far-fetched, Mise. I have to admit I never thought of Ben as the Maytag man, LOL.

As I was re-watching the second seaons episodes, I noticed that those ancient 1970’s computers were still humming along just fine. That in itself is very unusual - as we all know computers are at best finicky beasts that require regular maintenance, upgrades, and even replacements.

Then there is the vintage music collection. Surely Kelvin or Desmond would have requested a CD player, CD’s and other trapping of modern in-home entertainment to make them more comfortable. If they are like most guys, a new washer would probably be last on their list.

Then there’s the little problem of actually getting the appliances into the hatch over dirt trails with no mechanized transport.

If the writers/producers had stayed in period on the laundry equipment, it would have been avocado, coppertone, or harvest gold top loaders, maybe with fake wood trim. While front loaders did exist in the 70’s, they were rather square, ungainly, and bulky affairs, not the slim trim modern ones shown in the series. And certainly not a designer navy blue, but more like a regular appliance white.

    Very odd.

I tought rose made a comment to hurley about the laundry machine looking newer than the rest of the equipment in the hatch

Hurley and Libby did use the machines by the way. I dont think the washer or dryer mean anything.

I noticed the non-70’s front loader too. Figured they were cheating a little and going for a laundromat feel — Downtown.
