Perhaps the Island itself in in some sort of Casimir effect, and is in fact the past version of an island that disappeared in reality long ago, time shifting to the present time.

Re-watching the 1st season. In the season finale, as the raft is pulling away from the Island, and looking back at it Michael remarks, words to the effect, “How is it that a place this big hasn’t been found?”
Indeed that is a probably question that has been discussed here before. But I’d like to re-open the question perhaps in part due to ignorance (and not wanting to read all 129 posts that contain the word “invisible), and in part in light of what’s been revealed since the 1st season.
First of all, it is hard to understand how in this day of global geographic survey satellites, which map just about every inch of the earth’s surface, as well a military spy satellites keeping an eye on same, how this pair of rather large islands could be overlooked.
Some may say that the electromagnetic fields around the Island make it invisible, or make it appear to be where it really isn’t. OK, but wouldn’t the military have detected the magnetic anomaly and investigated further by now? And if the military does know of the island’s existence, why have they kept it a secret?
It’s not as if the Island was never discovered. After all, Dharma found it. So how is it that once found, it became “lost”? It became lost long before flight 815 arrived during that electromagnetic pulse. And that pulse should have also been detected by the military.
So far I haven’t detected any reasonable explanation for this conundrum. Dr. Edgar Hollowax (alias Dr. Marvin Candle) states, tantalizingly, in the Orchid training video, that the Island possessed uniqe electromagnetic properties that have allowed them to achieve a “sort of Casimir” effect. Just what they did with this effect is cut off, but we do see rabbit mysteriously get duplicated, and Hollowax shouts, “Don’t let them get close to each other!” as if it would be some sort of matter/anitmatter issue.
The Casimir effect is a known quantum mechanics property, a weak attraction between metals on the nano scale. It’s been proposed to help explain all sorts of quantum theory, and it’s also been proposed that if properly exploited, it could enable travel faster than the speed of light which in turn could result in time shifting or time travel.

I think you have made some interesting points here, Veefre. Why hasnt the military picked up on the EM energy? Why havent satellites picked it up? Or if they have, why are they keeping it a secret? (I love government conspiracy theories.) I am not sure I buy the idea that the island is really in the past but shifting to present time, but you have brought up questions I have not thought of before. (And I work for the military, haha!!) +1 for raising some interesting questions.
The Casimir Effect is a wonderfull idea although highly improbable in the real world.
The way it works is by having two plates(metalic, anything that is superconductive preferably) having the same charge. Its similar to two negative sides of a magnet opposing each other, except the goal of the casimir effect is to acheive a perfect vacuum between the plates, which to date is supposedly impossible, since that would mean that no form of energy would be present within the space (zero degrees kelvin).
To acheive something like that in our world the two plates would have to be the height of the ionosphere, and take in all the energy the planet can harness for it to work a milisecond. This is because many nuclear and sub molecular forces appose this occurence from happening, therefore an extreme ammount of energy is required. At that scale (if it were possible) we as humans would have to already be able to harness whole galaxies as energy sources. Again…if it were possible, and we could sustain it, we would theoretically be creating an artificial “wormhole/blackhole” leading us to speculate of controlling the warp in the space-time continuum. Therefore like Veefre said being able to travel faster than light, and possibly fast enough to go back or forwards in time.
It would be possible however to produce these vacuums(wormholes), in the nano scales, since many of the nuclear and sub molecular forces can be overlooked in smaller scales. It would also take less energy to power these theoretical nano scale casimir plates, in fact some speculate that it would be possible for them to power themselves.
At this nano scale is where people also theorised of the possibilities of zero point energy being harvested basically from nothing (since a vacuum is the embodiment of nothing, no energy) by using nano scale casimir plates to create mini “wormholes” into the realm of this energy source.
This is where Daniel Faradays concept of consciouness being able to travel into time is applicable, since consciouness is effectively a minute amount of energy traveling along “circuits” to other designations. Since this occurs at a nano scale, it can be possible to send your thoughts through time by using the nano scaled casimir plates to warp sub molecular spacetime.

Sry just trying to explain your question.
We know that gravity and electromagnetism are closely related and influence one another. A perfect example is how scientists discovered two stars that looked exactly alike in every way right next to each other. How could this be? Well they found out that the light traveling from the stars was warped by the gravitational force of a galaxy causing the light to bend around it and eventually land in our telescopes as two identical images.
This is what the military is actually working on right now. Its trying to produce a material that can warp light around it, simply through a specific arrangement of its atomic components, and electromagnetic charges. This will effectively render the thing invisible, since it resembles as if it werent there, although all it is doing is warping the light to go around it.
I believe the reason why the military cannot find the island is that the entrances to the island, are like trying to predict where a small eddy will form in the Indian ocean. Even or best wheather men/women cannot predict the weather perfectly because the first killometer of the atmosphere is a “vortex” of impossible coeficients that chaotically interact with each other.
I believe the crew on the boat is in between, thats why they are getting sick. They are between the real world and the island, lost in an elctromagnetic purgatory of sorts.

I have seen some posts here and there that say that the smoke monster is really a cloud of nanites. Perhaps if so the nanites are powered by the Casimir Effect.
Also, just that something is not scientifically possible doesn’t rule it out as a plot device for the series. While I think the writers try to stay within some bounds, I also think their backgrounds are more in literature than in science (as one might expect with lit majors) and therefore the science on Lost may by more science fiction than anything else.
After all, I don’t think any of the Lost fans actually believe this island really exists. OK, the majority probably don’t believe it’s real. We mostly just like a good yarn.

Allthetimeintheworld, did you say “highly improbable in the REAL world”? Since when are we watching the real world? If it’s possible for an invisible man to speak without being seen and a monster made of smoke to kill people, nothing is improbable on this show.

I Could be a god fearing christian, a quatum scientist, that casually practices yoga, enjoys walks on the beach, believes he saw an alien in a coffee shop, plays tennis with a 105 year old arangutang, gets his kicks by swimming with portuguese man of wars, is a practicing budhist, has an iguana as a pet, and bakes meat pies to cheer people that are imaginatively chalenged, …..and I would still find something I can relate to.
To tell you the truth I get slightly annoyed by the bible humping folks as well..so its all good.

Even science fiction - at least the good stuff - has a grounding in real science. The main reason why I want to discuss the scientific issues raised by the series is not so much to discuss the science, although that is fun, but rather to try to understand where the writers are coming from, and just what they are thinking is the “unified” theory that holds all the disparate parts of the plot together. Of course there’s no guarantee that they’ve figured that one out, or it might be muliple forces at work, or it may never be fully explained, but that’s part of the fun.
If there is a time bubble/shield around the Island (I won’t bother trying to justify with science how such a thing would work) it would suggest the Island is not something you can just look at from outside of this bubble/shield. Technically, if you could, you would be able to see through a field of distorted time, which makes my head hurt even trying to imagine it.
Anyway, a time bubble field around the Island kind of allows for the Island to be ‘cloaked’ - that’s my basic point.

We understand that our planet is effectively like an onion. It has many layers which represent different densities, temperature, and even electromagnetic charges. One interesting layer in the ionosphere located within our planets thermosphere, is responsible in protecting us from solar radiation. It has interesting properties because of the absorbed ionized energy from the sun as well as being our planets outermost magnetic edge. It acts like an invisible forcefield to deter many forms of wave like energies ranging from radio waves, to ultraviolet radiation.
I hope that clears it up, otherwise sry, Im having coffee as Im writing this sentence….(yawn) = )
