Ok, I’m going to try to make another theory here…
After reading most of the other theories on the reason Jin may or may not be dead this is what I came up with: Jin is still on the island, alive and well. We know that somehow in the time between now and the rescue our two groups (Locke’s group and Jack’s group) must come together in some way because Hurley is one of the Oceanic 6. We also know that Ben has information on who the freighter belongs to, Widmore.
I believe that Sun’s father, Mr. Paik, is also involved with the freighter somehow. I think that when Locke’s group and Jack’s group come together Ben will reveal this information and both Sun and Jin will realize that Jin cannot return with Sun. Jin will choose to stay on the island for one of two reasons: 1) he and Sun are afraid that Mr. Paik will have him killed—they now realize the extent of his power and position or 2) Jin stays on the island to ‘fight’ with everyone else, we already know that he feels terrible guilt for the type of life he led before and now he has a chance to redeem himself, save his wife, save his friends and destroy Mr. Paik all in one shot. I think once Sun’s safety is guaranteed Jin makes the choice to stay. Now, as for the grave—I think that this is also to protect Jin from Mr. Paik. As long as he thinks that Jin is dead he will take care of Sun and his grandchild. If Mr. Paik’s interests in the freighter were simply to find Sun and not the island then he will withdraw his funding for the island expedition once Sun is safe and sound. This accomplishes two goals—it ensures Sun and the baby are taken care of and it decreases the power of Widmore because he loses an ally.
Ok, I know this theory isn’t completely backed up by evidence but I think it could explain why Jin would stay on the island and why Sun would continue the story of his death.

You could very well be right. That would explain why her parents did not show up at the hospital. There is definitely something there.
Ok, I’m new to this discussion…but I thought Jin got off the island, and was trying to buy a panda and get to the hospital?
I have a question: if Paik is somehow involved with Widmore and the freightor, and his goal is to find Sun, then wouldn’t the Freighties that came to island recognize Sun? If you recall, in “Ji Yeon” Sun introduces herself to Faraday. Being as there are only two Asians on the island (that we know about, lol), you would think that Faraday would be able to put 2 and 2 together (if this is, in fact, the case), and realize that Sun was Paik’s daughter.
bull bull bull
baby is this bull bull or what
good lord shut up thesaddo. Seriously. Nobody wants to hear it!
dude, Sun was super sad… if he is alive, i don’t think she knows.
Very good. +1
Dude, good point about them not being able to recognize Sun. I hadn’t thought of that. Perhaps the men that are still on the freighter or just the captain know about Sun-or perhaps Widmore took Paik’s money to find Sun but because that isn’t Widmore’s main goal he only gives that info to a select few.
thesaddo—a simple ‘i don’t agree’ would suffice.
cheereys, you make a great point that Sun’s parents weren’t there when the baby was born. Actually, no one was there for her - hmmm, a little odd, huh? I totally agree with the idea that he stayed behind because her dad might kill him - if I recall correctly, he was supposed to do something for Sun’s dad in Australia, but didn’t, right??? Regardless - this is a good theory. +1
(Ignore “the saddo” who has nothing better to do in life than write “bull” in all the theories - so sad, so sad.)
Are we saying the world thinks that one of the Oceanic 6 men (or Charlie ?) is Ji Yeun’s father ?
nice theory, although I do agree with kissmyapocolypse that sun seemed pretty sad. Anyways,a question, maybe I missed this but who is the 6th oceanic 6 if not jin?
This is a good theory… but if Sun just wanted protection why would she have bought so much control of her fathers company and was being a total douche to him. I think if Jin was alive, Sun would be laying low.
P.S. oceanic 6 are: Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun, And Clairs son Aaron
