In other words, the freighter’s main mission is to rescue someone, but not to rescue the Losties. It’s to rescue Ben.

— Veefre

OK, this is an off-the-wall theory, but it’s an off-the-wall series, right?

The idea is that Ben actually wants to be captured by the freighter. It’s his ticket off the Island, so he can pursue whoever he thinks his enemies are on the mainland.

The Captain is “his man”. Michael is trying to stop Ben from leaving the Island and spreading his evil abroad.

In other words, the freighter’s main mission IS rescue, but not the Losties. It’s to rescue Ben.

This explains why Ben sends the Others off to “The Temple” and stays behind with the Losties. When he winds up back in the Barracks with Locke, he says he’s exactly where he wants to be.

Where better place to find Ben than in the Barracks?

Oh, and the $3.2 million? That the amount Ben will receive once he gets off the Island.

not a bad theory but the 3.2 million bit seems a bit off to me.

This also explains why the freighties are so disinterested in rescuing any of the Losties. Remember what Kearny said when Lapidus brought Sayid and Desmond to the freighter: “Why did you bring them here?” he demanded. All they want is Ben. And all Ben wants is to get to the freighter. Unfortunately for Ben, he’s not aware that MIchael has sabotaged the communications, the engines, and the kitchen (the refrigeration was probably sabotaged, and all that’s left is canned lima beans. Well, at least they’re not Dharma brand canned lima beans ;-). So the freighter as a quick way off the island is no longer a sure thing.

Remember, Ben is the master of manipulation. He’s now using one of a manipulators most effective ruses: reverse psychology. By claiming the freighter people are dangerous and a threat, he’s helping to ensure that the Losties will turn him over to the freighter people.

I think Michael hates Ben because of what he did to Walt and what he made Michael do to get Walt back. That’s why Michael managed to get on the freighter under an assumed name, and why he’s trying to prevent Ben from escaping the Island. It will be interesting to see what Ben does next to convince Locke to turn him over to Charlotte, Daniel, and Miles.

Well, it is interesting. Something new. I could go for Ben wanting to get to the freighter and even the captain being his man on the boat, but I don’t think they would be paying Ben, but the other way around. And Mickael doesn’t strike me as the noble type. Still, the freighter could be after Ben, yet someone seeing to it that he’s smuggled on board rather than captured.

Well, nobody can claim I copied this theory… lol…
