First of all, sorry if anyone else has already posted anything similar to this. This is my first theory so feedback would be appriciated!! Although i am a shipper I am going to attempt to objectively break down the love triangle between jack shephard, kate austen, and james ‘sawyer’ ford. I know the love triangle has probably been discussed too much but think most people defend their chosen side of the triangle and i am not going to do that.

Who does kate love the most? I believe that kate loves both jack and sawyer, but in different ways. it seems to me that she loves jack more deeply, but sawyer more passionately. Considering they have only been on the island for a couple of months, does she ‘truly’ love either of them? Is a couple of months long enough to get to know someone enough to fall completely in love with someone, and be prepared to spend the rest of your life with that person? In the case of kate, i think not. The person who i think she truely loved was tom, her childhood sweetheart. It is interesting that both jack and tom are doctors, and it appears that kate is trying to replace tom now that he is dead. She also felt like she wasn’t good enough for jack, which is also the impression i get from the way she is with tom. Kates relationship with sawyer in some ways also mirrors a relationship from her past - the guy who she suduced to help her rob the bank. Although i believe her relationship with sawyer is significantly deeper that her relationship with the bank robber, there is still some similarities. At times she has blatently used sawyer, and in ‘Eggtown’ she even tells him that she wants to use him. In ‘I do’, we saw kates attempt at settling down with kevin (i think his name is kevin), but she ran away and in ‘What kate did’, we saw kate run away from her feelings for both jack and sawyer. Therefore, it appears that so far kate is unable to settle down with anyone, whether this is the case in the future or not, i don’t know. Kate has shown that she deeply cares for both men at different times. For example, nursing sawyer after he returned from being shot on the raft, and her loyalty to jack in season one. I think kate will have a relationship with both jack and sawyer at different times and they will be two very different relationships. With sawyer she is his equal, it’s passionate, she was hurt when he didn’t want a child, yet she keeps running back to jack and has no reservations in using sawyer. With jack, if a relationship does develop, i believe that she will constantly be trying to be good enough for him, and will be loyal and dedicated to him, for a while. I would imagine that any kate-jack relationship would be just like the kate-kevin relationship, where she tries to commit to the relationship, but eventually she will either get bored, hit the road or feel that she is not good enough for him and leave. it is possible that she wants jack because she thinks that she cannot have him, and if she ever does ‘get him’, it is unlikely to last unless kate makes some huge changes.The main problem with the jack-kate side of the triangle is that after the ‘i love you’ from jack in ‘Through the looking Glass’, she still went back to sawyer for that night of cuddling. Similarly, after sawyer told her he loved her in ‘I do’, she went back to rescue jack as soon as they arrived back to the beach. A problem for the kate-sawyer side of the triangle is that she said that he reminds him of her step father, who she killed, however, she seems more able to be herself around sawyer and is able to relax and have fun. After kissing jack in ‘What kate did’, she runs away and spends more time with sawyer from then on, however, she constantly seems to be running away from sawyer back to jack. I think she is genuinely torn between the two, and may never truly make her ultimate, final choice.

Who does jack love? Jack admitted to loving kate in the season 3 finale, so that cannot be argued with. But just moments before the ‘i love you’, he kissed juliet, and just a few days after (in ‘the other women’), he kissed juliet again. The first kiss was possibly because he thought kate and sawyer were together and that he didn’t have a chance, but the second kiss with juliet came after kate had told him that she did not stay behind at lockes camp for sawyer. Not only that, but he had seen kate only a few minutes before hand, so he knew that she had come back and STILL kissed another woman! Don’t get me wrong, i do believe that jack loves kate, but i also believe that he feels that juliet would be more suitable for him, and is desperately trying to deny/fight his feeling for kate. Although i quite like the jack-juilet relationship, i believe they are most likely each others rebound person. Having said that, i don’t believe that kate is jacks true love; she may also be a rebound girl…from sarah. I think that sarah was the one jack loved the most, as we have seen in flashbacks just how distraught he was when she left him. He does not demonstrate quite the same level of heartbreak when he thinks that kate loves sawyer, not him. We see him looking very hurt when he see’s kate and sawyer together in the cages on the monitor, yet not long after he appears to have moved on. Also, jack was willing to leave the island with juliet and without kate, knowing full well that he could not return. this may be because he was still heartbroken by her, so he wanted to stay away from her, but any way you look at it, leaving her handcuffed and captured by the others is a very heartless thing to do to someone you love. At times, jack seems to treat kate like a child, and doesn’t include her in things (such as not telling her about capturing ‘henry gale’ and with starting the army idea with ana lucia). However, jack has always tried to protect kate and has shared many touching moments with her, and admits to still lovings her in the future. this future scene is likely to be at least 6 months since leaving the island (probably longer), so his love for her must be very strong if he still loves her by this point.

Who does sawyer love? From many ponts of view (including my personal view), sawyer undoubtedly loves kate. Unlike kate and jack, sawyer has not been in love before, so maybe he doesn’t know exactly what it is to be in love with someone. Sawyer has known kate for only a few months, and he knew cassidy (ex who he conned, and mother of his child) for a bit longer, 6 months, i think. If he had no problem conning cassidy after about 6 months of being with her, then maybe he would have no problem doing the same to kate since he has known her less time. sawyer has been willing to protect kate and sacrifice himself for her (‘I do’), so in many ways he his love for her is very strong. However, in ‘the beginning of the end’, he went with locke, knowing full well that kate would go with jack. obviously he was distresses by this separation (think back to when ben was taunting him about not standing a chance anymore, in ‘Confirmed Dead’), i can’t help but think that if he truely loved her, maybe he would have stayed with her. Even if he didnt agree with getting off the island, you’d have thought that he would have at least stayed to protect her, unless he was confident that jack would keep her safe. This would show that sawyer is willing to let kate go, as he wants her to be happy. jack does the same, and sends kate to lockes camp, with the belief thats sawyer will keep her safe. After sawyer had admitted to loving kate (to jack) early in season two, he still sleeps with ana lucia. Although sawyer and kate were not actually in a realtionship at the time, he did not turn down sex with another woman. Sawyer is a damaged individual, who has alot in common with kate, and although he loves her, sometimes it seems that he is more concerned with his own survival (think back to the raft situation).

In conclusion, i think this triaingle is the most complication one i have ever seen!! And seriously don’t don’t know how things will end up. I have tried to be unbiased, objective and provide a fair account of each side of the triangle, but if there is anything i have missed or you disagree with please comment!! Go easy on me because this is my first theory (even though its not exactly a theory, more an account of what i see).

Like i said, i am a shipper, i ship skate (kate and sawyer), but i hope that this has not been obvious and not biased my theory as i have tried to be fair and objective to both sides of the triangle. please comment.
