I think the smoke monster comes along with whispers, as well. Only because he too is relative to time shifts or loops. Perhaps he’s the protector of the space time continuum? Just a guess.

People have speculated for some time that the whispers had something to do with the smoke monster. I think this is a far better idea. I’m not going to try and take credit for it. Instead I offer you a link.
Please however, come back and tell me what you think. I am one of those people that doesn’t believe dead people [‘ghosts’] will play any part in the show and that ‘smokey’ isn’t the only source of the whispers.
I think you’ll all like this one:

Andrelus, I followed the link that you posted on MacCutcheons’ theory. It sure seems logical to me. I like your logic about it too! I am with you on this one +1
I dig it. I never really thought that the ‘ghosts and goblins’ line of thinking was being used with this show anyway. It also helps to explain why the whispers precede the appearance of someone. If they are traveling (so to speak), the whispering is heard when a ‘portal’ opens for the traveler to come through. Guess that means time travel is really frickin’ noisy! A +1 from this dude!
I like this theory, if you’ve ever read Stephen King’s “The Langoliers”about a plane that gets stuck between dimensions (the past and present) you will see that the whispers are heard upon re-entering the present as time catches up. Very cool story to check out.:) +1
i followed the link and it seems like a possibility intersting +1
As a Trek fan and one who really loved that particular episode I am embarrassed to say that I didn’t make that connection. I don’t know if it is corrrect but it is way cool
Does this also explain why we saw bare, scrubby feet walking through the jungle, and in newotherville, they all seem showered, dressed well, and the females are all wearing make up? Are these feel from a time loop?
MyStarbuck, I also sadly had not seen that connection, either. I hate when I miss stuff like that. They certainly do draw inspiration from Star Trek (and many other shows/movies/books), for example: a lot of the plot points for The Constant paralleled the finale episode of TNG. Lindelof even directly acknowledged this influence. I think it’s safe to say this is another nod to that series. Somehow makes me more excited about the upcoming film. +1
In the season 1 episode “Outlaws” which is Sawyer centric, Sawyer hears whispering in the jungle when he is searching for the boar who is targeting him. Usually I cannot understand what the whispering is, but it is very clear in this episode. It is saying “It will all come back around” That is what the man Sawyer killed in Sydney said just before he died. Sawyer killed the wrong man, and his last words haunted him in his dreams, and that is the same phrase the whispering was saying. If it is real time catching up to the island time, I am assuming that when the plane crashed on the island, Sawyer had not yet killed that man in real time yet. The thing that really gets me is that he would not have ever killed that man in real time if he didn’t go to that bar & meet Christian Shephard. Wow, I am confusing myself, but those are just my thoughts. Thanks for the link!
Nice theory. But if you read the whisper transcripts, they nearly always seem directly related to the events at that time. One of the whispers concerning Shannon include a reference to ‘sis’ - is that Boone? +1 for the theory, but not sure it is the whole answer.
