You can’t change the future!
No matter what Desmond ends up on that island. Widmore picked Faraday for this expedition for a reason. When Desmond tells Faraday that he was on an island with Desmond and that is how they met and where Faraday gave Desmond the number for his experiment, maybe Faraday leaked this, told someone that told someone else that told widmore. I want to say that Widmore manipulated Desmond since the day that he met Penny but why? Perhaps because she would find Desmond before Widmore would find the island and he needed that relationship in order to find the island. But if that is the case, then how did he find out about Desmond and the island? Did Faraday have something to do with that? Did Faraday send Widmore into the future in order to see if he finds the island? Did he go into the past in order to set up Penny and Desmond? And if Faraday did do this, did Widmore thn do something to Faradays memory (I mean if your conscience can travel time, who is to say that your memory can’t be erased or picked out)? Could that explain the cards? I don’t think that Faraday is trying to be psychic or predict the cards that Charlotte is showing him.

About the Widmore-Faraday connection, I think that Faraday might have gone and made his time travel experiment public-the one with Eloise-, which would of course attract lots of attention. He is a physics professor at Oxford, after all. Some would call him a nutcase, and some a ‘genious’-remember they called Faraday a genious as they were jumping off the helicopter, perhaps it had nothing to do with it, or it did, I’m not sure-. And Charles Widmore, even if Faraday would state the experiment could not be conducted on humans due to complications, decides to hire him for ‘mission: island’, as Widmore knows the time-related trouble they are having while trying to get to the island. Or something like that lol.
