Smokey will not be amused

— Veefre

Something is coming to the Island, and it’s not good.

It’s actually two things:

One, the people from the freighter are trying to release the Spider Protocol, which will unleash a test of a deadly virus that is designed to kill 30% of the population. This test, if “successful”, will enable the consortium composed of Hanso Foundation led by Mittlewerk, PAIK Heavy Industries, and Widmore Industries, to unleash the same virus on the world, resulting in a 30% reduction in population, and huge sales for the “immunization” for which of course the consortium will have a monopoly. The official goal is to save the earth from the doomday predicted by the Valenzetti Equation. But of course the real agenda is record profit and power for the members of the consortium. This is the disaster that Ben has warned about, one that he said “will kill every living person on this island”.

There is a second threat, and that is to unleash the full power of the extreme magnetic power source on the Island. Until now, It’s been under control, providing power for the Island inhabitants. However, there are forces - as yet undetermined - who want to remove this control and in the process initiate a reversal of the earth’s magnetic poles. This will severely cripple traditional navigation, electric power transmission, and communications on a global basis, thereby effecting the setback to human technology that also will avert the doomsday predicted by the Valenzetti Equation. It is difficult to say who might profit from such a diaster, but perhaps profit is not the motive, but rather a fanatic cult-like following, similar in a way to the Khmer Rouge and their ruthless suppression of technology. Unfortunately, the unleashing of the Island’s full power will destroy much of the Island itself, and Smokey will not be amused.

One, or perhaps both, of these theats will emerge in future episodes. Either one is bad enough on its own, but taken together it’s going to be quite a bumpy ride for the Losties. It remains to be seen if these threats can be thwarted (and the flash forwards seem to indicate that they are at least attenuated) but I suspect the forces behind them will not give up so easily.

Don’t know for sure if it will all come to pass of course, but I do like your thinking !

    Thanks, Ozzig!

I think we may get a few tantalizing bits of more information in the upcoming episode(s).

Well, it looks like something bad certainly did come (the freighter mercenaries) and Smokie most certainly wasn’t pleased.

But not so sure about the Spider Protocol etc. From Ben’s and Widmore’s little midnight tete-a-tete, it looks like this is some sort of strange complex game being played - perhaps a parallel to the game of RISK that the Losties enjoyed for a few brief moments in Ben’s house in the Barracks before all Hell broke loose.

Why can’t Ben kill Widmore? What are the “Rules”? Are the writers just teasing us with (another theory of mine) that this is all one big virtual reality game?

    Huh?
