Hurley needs some numbers to be his constant. The numbers were chosen because they allow Hurley to win the Lottery.

— JacksEyes

So far we are aware of Des and Daniel’s constants. And they too are aware of them. Somebody (Jacob?) needs Hurley on the island and needs him to have a constant, but one that he is unaware of. After a quick jaunt into Hurley’s past, the numbers provide the answer, as a constant, as a reason to go to Australia and to provide the funds required to get there.

He is in the asylum as a result of powers he does not know he has. Leonard is sent there to introduce him to the numbers. Libby’s task is to feed them to him continuously so that the constant is embedded, any opportunity to expose him to the numbers is taken. He wins the lottery, he faints, phew we nearly lost him then, but he’s okay.

Once on the island there are the numbers again. Hurley has his constant. Danielle has been transmitting the numbers on the island purely for Hurley’s sake.

He is captured by the Others but released and sent back. Why ? So that he is near the Hatch when it implodes and he gets a dose of the radiation. Now he is ready to communicate with Jacob and start time-shifting.

Hmm firstly the constant is supposed to be something you truly care about. Hurley hates the numbers he believes them to be cursed, it could be argued that he cares about the numbers because of his hatred…so ok.

My real problem with this is I don’t think any of the Oceanic 6 are going to need a constant. I think the reason they can leave the Island is they were a good distance away from the swan when it imploded (Sayid not being affected like Desmond). This is why the other Losties can’t leave they were all exposed by being on the beach and they don’t have a constant to safe guard them from side affects

Hey Lojozz, I totally agree with you. Has there been anything written on the board about how Aaron can leave, though? I did read one comment that as a baby born on the island, he wouldn’t be affected the same as the others..any thoughts?

Yeah wtf thats the way i’m looking at it. There doesn’t seem to be any other logical explanation for Aaron other than he is different becasue he was born on the island. Why that would be I don’t know.

JacksEyes, I agree with Lojozz and wtf. The other problem with this theory is that the ‘numbers’ were what drew Rousseau’s ship to the island. She didn’t enter them. What she entered was a distress call.

Also, Hurley wasn’t any where near the implosion.
