- Location of the Island - Vile Vortices (http://darkufo.blogspot.com/2008/03/constant-non-local-brain-games-by-jwood.html)
First, freighter Omar notes that the freighter’s last port was Fiji. Second, the Black Rock journal was found in Madagascar. This gives us something to work with. In the book Living Lost: Why We’re All Stuck on the Island, J. Wood makes mention of 20th century Scottish naturalist Ivan Sanderson and the vile vortices. In the 1970’s, Sanderson was interested in how ancient sailors mapped the world, and in his studies kept coming across Bermuda Triangle-type accounts coming from a number of places around the globe (navigational instruments malfunction, lost time, odd lights, disappearing ships, etc.) Sanderson tracked where these incidents took place, and found they occurred in a regular frequency around the world, primarily in five equally-spaced regions around the Tropic of Capricorn, five around the Tropic of Cancer, and at each of the poles. He called them the vile vortices.

In the past, cartographers often overlaid polyhedral grids on maps in order to have a clear picture of coordinates and to orient themselves (and maybe they still do). In the Timaeus, Plato even argued that the elements were made up of five regular polyhedral solids: the tetrahedron (pyramid), hexahedron (cube), octahedron (eight-sided diamond), the twelve-sided dodecahedron, and the twenty-sided icosahedron; think of the Bucky Fuller geodesic dome inside the Swan Station. Sanderson noted that when an icosahedron was mapped onto the globe, the points where the icosahedral lines converged pinpointed those twelve vile vortices. Stranger still, of all of those five Platonic solids, only the octahedron the eight-sided shape can be overlain on top of the icosahedron, and have convergence points that line up with the twelve points of the icosahedron. We already know how important the number eight is to the narrative; whether the eight-sided Platonic solid matching with twelve vile vortices mapped out by Ivan Sanderson on an icosahedral grid was intentional or not, its a little intriguing, and we’ll be getting back to eight shortly. But how all this relate to Fiji and Madagascar? Omar said the freighter’s last port was Fiji, and the Black Rock journal was found in Madagascar; both Fiji and Madagascar are located in two of the vile vortex zones.
(Also left out by this Author: It should be noted that the Polar Bear skeleton was found in Tunisia which also happens to fall in one of the vile vortex zones & there is a vortex zone on the North Pole which would explain how the polar bear came to the island in the first place.
- purpose of the island & the dharma initiative
We already know the influence of Buddhism on Lost. The dharma Initiative is named after the Buddhist doctrine of essential nature, and each of their stations are labeled with a symbol comprised of an eight-sided bagua. In Buddhism, the way to enlightenment is through the Noble Eightfold Path: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration (in that order). The path itself is not so much a map to Nirvana as it is qualities found within a person who has reach Nirvana. The eighth path, right concentration, has to do with meditation. There are four stages, or jhānas, on that path, and they lead through different stages of rapture and an evenness of mind until the individual transcends the pleasure and pain of the material world—when the consciousness literally becomes unstuck.
Incidentally, the fourth jhāna is also the access point into psychic abilities; in the Anguttara Nikaya (which is all about numbers), the Buddha makes mention of the abilities one can access if they attain that state of mind, which include appearing, vanishing, moving through solid objects as easily as through space, flying, and walking on water (there’s an online translation here). While Desmond’s consciousness is becoming unstuck against his will, it seems some people like Walt have already accessed this fourth jhāna.
And the eights keep on coming. The Catholic element in Lost has already been marked out by Mr. Eko. When thinking of eight in the New Testament, the eight beatitudes in Matthew’s account of the Sermon on the Mount rank right up there. The eighth beatitude states that those who are persecuted for following the path of righteousness will have the kingdom of heaven (yet another path to some transcendent place). As far as I understand it, righteousness is the key idea here, and it has to do with upholding an ethical justice according to God’s will—and God’s will is unchanging, constant, as is the kingdom of heaven. This means a righteous person will try to be consistent with the unchanging ethics of God, and the only one to fully achieve that consistency was executed (talk about persecution). Mr. Eko attempted to live according to God’s will after he was saved by his brother Yemi, but was still judged harshly by Smokey. No character has a more spiritual stance on the island than Locke, and no character has been more persecuted for trying to do what he believes is the right thing.
But like chocolate and peanut butter, text and image, Cuse and Lindelof, Catholicism is a complement of Judaism. There have been Old Testament references all over Lost, and numbers are important in the OT; eight people made it on to Noah’s boat, God made eight promises to Abraham in Genesis, a boy is circumcised eight days after he is born, and the eighth sefira on the Tree of Life is Hod. The Tree of Life is still another mystical path to the transcendent, and it has ten sefirot, or numbers. Hod, the eighth, means “splendor,” as well as giving thanks (from hodaah). Among other things (and I don’t pretend to understand it all), hod is supposed to symbolize observation and steadfastness—constancy—on the Tree of Life. Constants aren’t just mathematical.
(Note aside from the Author: So my theory on why DHARMA studied the island is they realized the strong magnetic pull of the island and psychic occurences on the island. At this point all the talk was going on about electromagnetism experiments and such. So in one last effort I tried searching for ‘mind reading’, ‘mind control’ and ‘electromagnetism’. And low and behold there are scientific theories (if you can believe what you read on the internet) that state that one person’s thoughts can be ‘read’ and transferred to another person using (you guessed it) an electromagnetic field, or radio waves, etc. (Do a search on HAARP, Synthetic Telepathy, ssss, rhic, etc).
- Inhabitants of Island (Smokey & such) I already explained how I think the polar bear made it to the island through the vortex at the north pole, but I wanted to talk a little about Smokey & the HurleyBird. I think the Hurley bird is a prehistoric animal or a evolution of a bird that has been isolated on the island for a long time (could have come from the Galapogos vortex). Since the island is off somewhere in its own time/space; if some prehistoric animals wandered through a vortex to the island by chance then they might have missed the global cataclismic event that killed off the rest of their species.
Smokey on the other hand is a whole different breed of being. After some research my thoughts are that Smokey is a Djinn and apparently I am not the only one:
http://www.quasiadam.com/english/chapter2.html
I would explain this more, but the website above does a great job of comparing Djinn facts to Smokey Scenes in Lost.
Now we know that Smokey is nicknamed “Cerberus” by the DHARMA initiative. Cerberus is a 3-headed Greek mythology hound that guarded the afterlife. It’s job was to guard the gateway to the underworld to ensure people could enter it, but never leave it.
I believe at this point there are 3 Smokeys. Cerberus was 3 headed and so there are 3 Djinns on the island. Based on the website above you can see multiple smokeys in the same freeze frames and it seems that these 3 Smokeys have different personalities. These personalities come from the minds of the people they read on the island (this is why you hear whispers from Smokey, see faces in them & why sometimes the smokey kills you and sometimes it just stares you right in the face).
Well that is “my” theory so far. I hope you like it. As far as the purpose of the island I know that it is a little weak. I have this feeling that the island contains the terrestrial gateway to the afterlife… to both heaven & hell (not technically purgatory because you can be alive and on the island) aka “Jacob’s Ladder”. The show seems to be all about choices faith vs science, fate vs coincedence, good vs evil… even comes down to your movie choices (Episode 4.4 Kate flashback… I forget the name): Hurley asks Sawyer what movie he wants to watch “Xanadu or Satan’s Doom?” Heaven or Hell… hmmm. Hope up you have enjoyed my compilation theory.
In response to Comments.. We all know the numbers are part of an (Vilentcia sp?) equation and such… but what if the numbers don’t actually signify numbers? Sticking with the Old Testament, the numbers could be part of Gematria … which is a hebrew study of assigning numerical values to scripture to derive deeper meaning.
We know that before Rouseau changed the outgoing signal from the radio tower to her distress signal that it replayed the numbers on a loop. Considering that only 2 stations (Pearl and Swan) needed to know the numbers, does it make sense that these were broadcast on repeat to the whole Island? I think that the numbers are linked to some sort of phrase and that they were broadcast on repeat to the Island as some sort of propaganda or ideology that DHARMA wanted to brainwash the Islanders with.
More on the Gematria (Hebrew numbering system): Used with the Talmud (discussions of Jewish History/Faith) & the Midrash (discussions on biblical texts) to help find deeper meaning.
And even more fun on Gematria… one of the subject’s most influential writers: Rabbi Jacob ben Asher.
Having a lot of fun with it: Talmud is used interchangeably with Gemara (the basis for Codes of Rabbinic laws). Here’s a fun tidbit: An anagram of Gemara and Midrash is dharma mirages.
Sorry about some of the syntax errors. It seems that some of it get messed up when trying to post.
Nice post, TheTruthAboutTheIsland.
Just as a sidebar though, how about including the Hindu interpretation of Dharm (or dharma) which precedes and is slightly different from its Buddhist nature. Without going into complications, it seems to have a close link with Desmond especially. If we view dharm from the karmic perspective i.e. your actions determine your rewards/punishments, then the space-time continuum and Desmond’s repeated time travel would alter events and outcomes as he changes what he does/says. It sounds rather pedestrian to state the obvious perhaps and I’ll try and write something more thoughtful in a separate post but I’m just throwing it in for now.
Again, good thoughts.
excellent post. i share many of your beliefs, especially about the vile vortices and polar bears
OMG! It’s so clear now!
We still have no idea what’s going on. I haven’t heard anything here that I haven’t heard before. I thought you were going somewhere special with the numbers, but then you stopped after 4, 8….. All you have is coincidence unless you can explain the rest of the numbers. Thanks for connecting all these great ideas, but I can’t give you a +1 because there’s not much here that’s original.
If you can explain the rest of the numbers I’ll give you a +1 Try to tie in the 4th Jhana, 8 beattitudes, into Valenzetti as well.
Check out the south atlantic annomaly, there are some pictures from nasa showing the radiation spectrum taken from space, so far that seems to be the largest “Vile Vortice” on the planet.. Its also one of the reason why the some south american governments like Brazil pushed the uses of cellular phones to be used instead of ground lines being placed. a mystery in itself.
Otherwise good try fror the already mentioned ideas.
I will add this to my theory:
In response to Vincent… I will edit my post, but I will put in my 2 cents about the numbers. We all know it is part of an (Vilentcia sp?) equation and such… but what if the numbers don’t actually signify numbers? I wonder if we can find any meaning from the Koran, or even a “Wheres Waldo” book to explain the significance of the numbers themselves.
I believe that Dharma Intitiative , as the name itself implies that they are more centralized on eastern varieties of beliefs like Hinduism, and Budhism. Another example is the word Nemaste that welcomed the guests to the Island. We understand that they are not monotheistic in any way and actually believe in many gods and demons. This is very different from the “others” belief in there being one leader (Jacob) pointing to a monotheistic belief system. No wonder the others killed everyone that was involved with Dharma, because this spiritual view might not coincide with Bens one god, one Jacob view. This is probably why Ben tried to kill Locke, and why eventually Locke will be threatened by Hurley.
Bob’s Your Uncle
truth you speak the truth.
i champion the vile vortices theory as well. this was eloquently laid out.
+1 sir. or madam.
