Either 1) the future can be changed or 2) we are dealing with multiple timelines.

Daniel sends Eloise’s conscience into the future where she learns how to run the maze. She comes back, runs the maze and then dies.
In the future she had learned the maze, now she is dead so she won’t learn the maze in the future so she can’t come back etc. etc..
Either 1) the future can be changed or 2) we are dealing with multiple timelines.
End of conversation.
I thought the same but there is a third option..
Desmond conks out for a long time just after Eloise ran the maze - after Faraday has expressed his astonishment at the rat knowing the route. He explained this was because he only built the maze that morning, and that he would not teach Eloise for another hour.
I would be inclined to say that Faraday taught Eloise during the time Des was in the future on his longest trip so far.
I think that once Eloise consciousness returned from the future then the very clever rat knew how to run the maze. However after about 70 minutes the rat was dead, (very sad) but during those last 70 or so minutes of her life she knew how to get through the maze. So providing eloise’s consciouness was sent forward to a point in time no further than 70 minutes then she could get the knowledge to solve the maze as this was kmowledge that the rat possesses afterabout one minute after she is exposed to the ray. Which then avoids any need fir anyone to teach the maze to the rat.
Its a tough one to call but i don’t think we can say ‘end of’ as MacC points out Des was out for 75 mins. The questions is how long does it take to teach a Rat how to run a maze?
I think it is unlikely, given Daniel wasn’t going to start to teach for an hour that he could get this done in 15 min and have time for the rat to die and then be busy calculating before Des woke up.
So all in all +1 though I do think this might just be loose writing.
I think the answer to this puzzle will also solve the puzzle of Daniel learning the correct frequency - he never learned it for himself but was told it by his future self via time-jumping Des. Also the rat may have never learned the maze because he died before he was taught it…..if he already knew it then was there any reason for Dan to teach it to him. I think the answer is the same for both…..but what is it?
BTW, as a huge rat fan and previous owner of many….they may be very intelligent but you couldnt teach one how to run a maze in just 70 odd minutes…it would take a few days atleast.
Here’s a thought.
Daniel comes up with his rat experiment and builds his maze. Presumably he has had many rats and tried many settings on his equipment. Does he ever actually teach his rats how to run the maze. Did he try the experiment, fail, then teach his rat the maze anyway, even though the experiment has already failed? Because if he didn’t then the experiment was bound fail anyway. There is definitely a paradox here.
Ha yeah - good points. I put it to MyStarbuckHatesLost catch a rat and build the maze to test this out, seeing as how he’s already crossed the Dharma larder off his ‘to-do’ list.

The rat ws exposed to radiation like Des and Des needed to contact his “constant” in order to not die, like the guy on the freighter. Because the rat and the guy on the freighter didn’t have a “constant” they died.
I agree. If one can jump to the past with knowledge from the future and affect outcomes, he can affect the future. Done.
