After watching the episode The Economist me and my brother began to make a list of reasons why people would be SENT to the island.Sorry if someone already posted a theory like this one,I havent read through the ones concerning this subject.
First to review, who are the 4 new people and what is their purpose.
Not including Naomi, who was suppossed to be the straw that stirs the drink in this situation, we have Miles Straume, Daniel Faraday, Charlotte Lewis, and Frank Lapidus.
So after watching the episode The Economist I wonder who sent these people and who they were after.Well Miles comes right out and says we are here for Ben.So why?Well it never occured to me that Miles is an exorcist and that there is a spirit on the island.Yeah, Jacob. Its makes sense.
My brother told me he was watching the show Supernatural one time and that the would use a grayish, sand or powder to keep demons away from them.Thats what Locke and Ben so carefully stepped over when going to Jacobs house. If the line is broken, then the spirit can go free.
Why someone wants Jacob is a question I didn’t even want to start trying to answer.
I wanted to know WHO.
So when Naomi first gets on the island she tells them Penny sent them.
At the end of the second season two men in a building call Penny saying that “they’ve found it”.
When Charlie talks to Penny she says she didn’t send anyone.
Naomi has a picture of Penny and Des.
After realizing all of that I figure the best candidate for the Mystery man would be Penny’s Father.
Penny would’ve gone to her father saying she thinks she found Des.I think her father told her he would either handle it, or told her to forget about it.Either way i think thats when HE found what he was looking for.The Island and Jacob.
So he sent a team there to get Jacob for some reason.
He sent Miles obviously because he is an exorcist.I think he sent Frank because he saw through the “Everyone on the plane is dead” bullshit.I don’t know why he sent Charlotte other than she knows about Dharma in some way.And he sent Daniel because he knows all sorts of things about electromagnetism.
I just don’t know why he wants Jacob, because I dont think the real reason is there is for Ben.
I also think that they are using the Desmond as a cover for their true intentions.Plus, no one knows Des is there or is looking for him other than Penny, which make s me think he father is behind it.

I’m confident there are no ghost involved in this story.
ill be the first. this makes total sense. i am a HUGE fan of supernatural and what your brother says is kinda correct. its actually salt they use to stop ghosts/demons etc escaping from somewhere. maybe the gray stuff it salt. who knows. its not letting me +1 you so imagine be doing it
I believe Mr. Withemoore is a descendant of the owners(philatropists) of the Black Rock. This would makes sense because lots of “old money” dates back a couple of hundred years, so the fact that they lost a slave ship woud have been a considerable financial drawback worthy of some investigation. The fact that he discovers the book at the present day, with it being unscared , and in near perfect condition shows that the boat did not sink and someone is in close proximity to it. So whoever found that book that person knows where the island is. Thats why I believe he wants to find Ben, and eventually Prof Richard Alpert the original holder of the book.
If there are ghosts, then Bob’s Your Uncle.
It would make more sense if the apparitions were some form of Unhinged Subconsciouness not capable of holding on to one specific reality, but jumping from on parallel to another. Thats what phasing is in actuality, being able to move into sub-space and out, where all your molecules (and in this case your consciousness as well) are out of allighntment.
The grey powder would make sense if it was some sort of powdered lead compound, since lead is very iffiecent in blocking out radiations of all forms (including electromagnetic)
