- Flag this theory:
Desmonds conscious is going back and forth in time…at least this is how Faraday explains it. The events are real as he is not changing the past (which cannot happen) he is simply completing the past therefore ensuring events in the future take place (which happen reagardless).
When Desmond finds Pennys father at the auction and they chat in the bathroom. I think it’s there that Widmore comes up with his brilliant plan to get rid of Desmond. He bought the Black Rock journal….He obviously knows something of the island…..given the amount he paid for it. The point? Send Libby (who i believe worked for Widmore and possibly has visited the island more than once and who I think also had the “sickness” which is why she was in the institution with Hurley) to give Desmond the boat and the ability to enter the boat race (which i also believe was a sham) and have Desmond land on the island or make it easy for him to do so with specific “race” coordinates or whatever. So in a nut shell:
Widmore is behind Desmond landing on the island. Libby worked for Widmore and was in the institution due to possibly being on the island before. Libby purposly gives Desmond the boat under orders from Widmore. Desmond follows the “race route” and ends up on the island therefore being away from Penny.
PS. Libby and Hurley were each others “constant” which is why Hurley asked if they knew each other and Libby gave that famous look at the end. She remembered.
I’ll add more to this later.
Ok, adding more. Speaking of Libby in the institution…remember when we see her there looking all comatosed. Think maybe Libby was “jumping” at that moment or had just “jumped”??? Hmmmm…..god i love this show!!!

+1 Excellent thoughts about Libby. I think you’re right about the boat and Widmore. I’m less sure about Libby being a mind time traveller, but good connection with Hurley - it’s that compelling detail which gives the idea merit.
lunaash, I agree with Angelo 100%. Excellent work!
+1 from me. ;-)
True, there is no solid proof about Libby possibly going back and forth as Desmond is. But, when I thought about why she would be in an institute I thought of only two reasons #1 She was there to keep an eye on Leonard (per Widmore request) as he spouts off numbers and possibly other island secrets. #2 She had in fact been to the island before (not as a Lostie) but as an employee of Widmore’s and was institutionalized due to leaving the island possibly the wrong way. As to why she was on flight 815. Maybe only time will tell. I’m certain it may have something to do with more work from Widmore. But, that look she gave….leads me to believe that her relationship with Hurley, though I do believe it was genuine, may also have to do with her figuring out he’s her “constant” which would explain why she seemed to be in her right mind on the island.
Nice thoughts Lunaash. My only question is: Would Mr. Widmore really go through all that just to get rid of Desmond? You are saying he paid all that money for the black rock book, hired Libby, put together a sham race, and ensure Desmond enters the race and follows specific predetermined coordinates. That is a lot to go through just to get rid of a guy trying to hook up with your daughter, don’t you think?
No, I don’t think he went through all that to get rid of Desmond I just think he incorporated it into the grander scheme of things. Now, what that grander scheme is we have yet to find out.
Lunaash: I don’t mean to sound like I’m picking on you particularly, but I’ve just read the first 3 or 4 pages of theories and this is making me crazy. We saw exactly ONE person time travel. Because of that, the sum total of current theories is that EVERY SINGLE LAST LOSTIE without exception is time traveling.
Lunaash: This IS for this particular theory: a rich and powerful man wants to get rid of his daughter’s undesirable boyfriend - and THIS is the plan he hatches? So if there was no island, he would just put up with Desmond? I think Widmore can be more direct than that, don’t you?
No, once again….sigh…..I think Widmores involvement with the island was already occuring when he spoke to Desmond in the bathroom, being able to send Desmond there (making it seem like it was his idea) was just a bonus.
