Try to grow a sense of humor

— Veefre

I thought I had already posted this as a theory a week or two ago, but maybe it was just a comment to another. The thread about 755 jogged my memory. Couldn’t find the theory so here it is.

Anyway, the idea is that the entire Island is a big computer game.

Ben Linus, of course is the master programmer, writing everything in Linux, since he shares the same name as Linus Torvald, the creator of Linux.

The characters are all avatars of real people, who are busy in their homes (or workplaces) tapping their keyboards and clicking their mice.

The time shifts could be caused by something as simple as a lack of communication among nodes on the network. One computer gets its time a bit off, and propagates this for a while until the master clock steps in and synchronizes everything.

The comforting thing about this theory is that no real people (or real animals) are harmed in the process, unless somebody gets a fatal case of carpal tunnel.

Funny, but if it’s true then Lost will officially become the worst series in television history.

Veefre, this couldn’t possibly be the case. The network wouldn’t put that kind of a show on the air.

    Iroc & Annie,

True, it would be a lousy ending, but has that impaired DVD sales of The Sopranos?

If done more imaginatively than I had described, it might be an ok scenario. The advantages for the writers are obvious: they wouldn’t have to account for every nuance in the series - they could always attribute any inconsistencies to the “players”, lol.

And then there is the potential for a spin-off - the saga of the actual players, and their lives.

OK, I admit I’m only half-serious in this, but the computer simulation aspect of the series does seem to be there.

Or maybe its all a dream. A terrible, terrible dream.

Lets vote, which would be stupider, a terrible terrible dream, or a “Tron” rip off?

You might be onto something here. The flashforwards show life after this MMORPG has shut down. Some are just coping with it, while others (read ‘Jack’) got so involved that they can’t adjust to life on the outside. The real Jack goes round trying to meet other members of his online team to replicate that first buzz of being part of the game, finds out this is a poor substitute, grows beard, becomes suicidal, meets up with real-world Kate (who only played on Sundays) and screams at her that they have to go back (i.e. start a petition to have this game put back online again). Hurley’s user played so much he got bored of the game, but also to the extent that he starts believing it was real - hence his Charlie visions.

The fact they released a computer game based on Lost must surely be a clue.
