Ok, i posted this a while back, but i have changed it slightly and would value opnions now as we know a little more:
The losties are trapped in this time zone, The thing is, they shouldn’t actually be there, they should have died in a plane crash, so they are on what you might call “borrowed time”
Now, Smokie, with its God complex following an “incident”, most likely caused by the fact the island “moved” which sent the monster/ jacob,/ island in general into a spiralling rage, knows thiat the passengers should have died and feels it must cease their existince, but only once it has used them for its own purpose. As magical as the island seems, it has done some pretty harsh things and is a lot darker place then we realise. For every paralysed man it has healed, or cancer ridden woman, it has orchastrated the deaths of many others, for what it believes to be the “greater good”.
So, Smokie chooses at what point they should die on the island…how i hear you ask, by waiting until they reach a significant point in their life where they may have found some sort of redemption or significant point in their life which Smokie uses as a point to kill them. Obviously as long as that peson is no longer needed for the grand plan!
Confused, let me give you some examples:
Boone - obssessed with his sister, in love with her, finnally gets over it and makes peace with it to be able to get on with his life, he dies
Eko: comes to terms with the fact that although he has been a bad person, the reasons were for good to protect his brother, he dies
Shannon: Finnaly realises someone will love her (sayid) for who she is,rather than what she thinks she should be, she dies
Ana Lucia: Get’s over the fact she cant kill someone anymore, repents for what she had done before, she dies
Pilot: May have felt responsible for flight 815 crashing, finds out that his passengers are still alive, feels better about it, he dies
Charlie provides for his new “family”, something he always thought he should do growing up by his own family, protects clare and aaron, wants to finalyy become the hero, he dies
Locke: is needed by the island to protect it, gets use of his legs back
Now, i know not all of these were killed by smokie, but the island and smokie and jacob are all connect somehow and all the events, every little thing that happens i belive is being ocherstated by the island/ smokie/ Jacob,
what do you think
I agree that this is what smokie “does” but the question still remains what “is smokie” I think you are on the right track as far as how it is judging people and when to dispose of them from the grand game.
it’s a purpose built machine to protect the island from those that theaten it, be that directly or indirectly. The smoke we see is the manifestation of the machine in application, i believe there is some sort of computer or system which links into the mind of Jacob and also the heart of the island
The only part I really disagree with is the idea that the passengers should have died in the crash. Most of them did. Some of them didn’t. And since then some of them have left the Island (you’d have thought Smokey would have worked a little harder to ensure that didn’t happen).
However, there’s good stuff here about the ustification for life (and the extinction of life) on the Island for the purposes of a greater good. I do believe they are, all the people on the Island, entwined in a greater purpose in which some play a more significant role than others - thus why Michael had to play his part before he could die, for example.
