I believe the producers have not decided exactly how to end the show and have 2 to 3 or even more possible exits.
I enjoy coming on this site and reading all the interesting and plausible explanations. I believe the reason that there are so many contrasting theories is because the writers wanted to give themselves several different “outs” or just havent decided yet. Think about it. The best way to keep the ending to a story secret is to not let yourself, or your staff, know exactly how it will end. There are no correct theories,just plausible routes that have been left open. Also, i believe the writers will ultimately explain the “big” picture but probably wont bother themsleves with some of the less important mysteries the show has created.

I think they are getting closer to a final path than they were a couple years ago, but yeah, they still might not even know how they want to end it yet.
And stupid comments like above are why I think I’m going to go outside more and stay away from the internet, they are letting anyone on the internet nowadays :)
I only know of one show that was completely written prior to being aired, Northern Exposure, and even in that they had to make changes because of staff changes. I think Darlton has a master plan of how the finale will end, and the next couple of years will be filler to get us there.
I don’t think the next two seasons will be filler, but perhaps the most exciting mindbending TV, that will live up to the LOST’s position as possibly the best show ever (I don’t say that lightly).
That being said, I think there are multiple paths forward, which has already been demonstrated through every decisive moment in LOST thus far. The three alternative endings (ok, the Desmond one being implausible) would have each led LOST down different paths.
Imagine if it were Sawyer in the coffin. Kate’s secretive trips that elicited Jack’s jealousy would take on a very different significance.
I have heard them say that they have known for a long time what the very final image of the show will be.
Other than that, they’ve never said anything to really hint towards (or block themselves in to) the ending.
It’s assuring to know they’ve got the final image, though. Makes it seem like the show is building towards a defining, memorable climax.
I agree with angelo, i think they’ve got it figured out, i think that some where there is a “lost bible” written at the beginning of the show, detailing the entire story line, and all the connections between the characters.
