I’m very surprised that nobody has suggested this yet, but it seems obvious to me that we are supposed to think that the wheel had been artificially frozen to stop it going BOOM.
The deeper down you go the hotter it gets, not colder and the Michael / nitrogen / C4 thing is either a clue or a red herring.
Well, you have to go really, really deep for it to start getting hot - like a half mile or more. It gets colder and colder until you start reaching the point where it heats up - but it doesn’t get freezing. Even though Lock and Ben went “real deep,” practically they couldn’t have been that deep, especially when starting on a mountain.
