Miles is the only person that appears not to have an actual reason for being there.

Ok, when Chang asks whoever to take the baby outside, he refers to the baby as a he.
We all assume the baby is Charlotte because she is the one who mentions that she is trying to find out where she is born.
What also struck me was, if the baby had been Charlotte and other theories are Dan is the father, why would Cheng be so forceful about the baby if it had not been his. You would assume someone else would get the baby outside.
All 4 of the friegher people have a reason to be on the island: Daniel, in some form wants to study the island, or wants to help the DI; Lapidus was supposed to be the pilot of 815, so he maybe hoping to find the pilot who he knew; and Charlotte is looking for where she was born. Miles is the only person that appears not to have an actual reason for being there. The only thing we know about him, is that he can talk to dead people.
My theory is, the baby in the Dharma ComicCon 08 video, is Miles, and Cheng is the father. Miles is there to talk to his dead dad.

Good point. I think everyone heard that baby cry and hopped on the Charlotte boat. I could go either way with it being Charlotte, but I also like the possibility that Pierre is Miles dad and that it might be little Miles in the background. +1
If that video was done (Island time) then that would put the baby at the right age to be Miles.

Makes good sense to me. Thanks to all of you who have seen these videos and podcasts and for sharing this information. I have not been able to view them because my computer at home has “dinosaur dial-up” and I cannot view these at work so I am left in the dark. Another good reason to check out your theories!! Yeah, ok, I still think it’d be way fun if Charladay were father-daughter (was I the “other theory” you mentioned? ;) but this is far more plausible. I didn’t know DocArzt had posted this theory, I had first read about it in JOpinionated’s super cute poem about Pierre Cheng.

Oh, and as for Miles not having a reason for being there… uh, he can talk to dead people. There are dead people on the island. Talking to them can be useful.
Possibly, but also others from other sites. aww, don’t feel guilty. no one else was going to mention it, and someone has to bring stuff from other places here.
Yeh, he can talk to dead people, and the island has a lot of dead people. But as for a personal reason…other than talking to a dead relative, or someone else’s dead relative for a lot of money, he has no reason.
Guess this is obvious to most of you, but note that the ability of Miles to talk to dead people could allow us to see “flashbacks-like” of already disappeared characters like Rousseau, or why not Libby (although it is creepy to imagine Miles digging Libby out… but not out of character from Miles).
Also as to the motivation of Miles, when we see him in the car in his flashback of 4.02, the radio speaks of the discovery of the 815 at the bottom of the ocean. So it would seem to me that his motivation (if anything else than money!) to join the Kahana crew will appear later in a flashback we didn’t see yet.
Finally Miles abilities do not seem to stop to speaking to dead people. He appears also to be able to somehow read into people’s minds. See his discussion with Michael when the latest (in all senses) boards the Kahana in season 4. An extremely useful ability considering all the lies and secrets on the island.
Last thing (although not related to the theory): I really love Miles’ character and congratulations to Ken Leung for a great acting performance. I hope (and am sure) that Ken will have more lines in the seasons to come, and why not join Michael Emerson (Ben being my very favorite character of the series) in running himself for an Emmy Award in the times to come.
