When they all return, I believe John will not be physical, but will instead take over Jacob’s/Christian’s role.

Okay, so this is my first post on here. I’ve read alot of theories, but haven’t had any time to write up one of my own. I’m not saying this is going to happen, as I’ve found that Lost is such an unpredictable show. This is just an idea of what could be going on right now, and what could be going on in the future.
When Ben and Jack talk at the funeral home, Ben tells Jack the island requires everyone to come back including the now dead Locke. To me it does not make sense that Locke or Ben would have to return. I would think the people who all left together on the helicopter (Jack, Kate, Aaron, Hurly, Sun, Sayid, Lapidus, and Desmond) would be the ones the island required to all return together. Balancing things out, if you will. If Ben and Locke were to return to the island, it could be by theirselves as they did not leave with the others. However, I think Ben knows he needs the others help to get back himself and knows Locke can’t get back by himself being dead and all. So, he manipulates Jack (as he does so well) to get himself and John included. The question is why? For Ben it’s obvious, he loves the island and feels it’s where he is supposed to be, and that he is meant to protect it and continue the work on the island. That’s where getting John back, comes in. I believe that Ben knows it is Johns destiny to return to the island and take over ultimate leadership of the island. Not in the role that Ben played, but in the role that Jacob has played.
Obviously the island has special powers, and has the ability to read into the souls of people. I believe that Jacob came to the island (probably on the Black Rock), and the island saw him as the new leader of the island. However, knowing that all men are weak at times and give into their own thirst for power it had to make him more than a man, so it ended his physical existance and promoted him to a higher level. However, he needed a messenger to carry out what needed to be done and he chose Ben. When the failsafe key was turned at the end of season 2 and the sky went all purple, I believe that this sucked (or started to suck) the lifeforce out of Jacob. So, when he told John “Help Me”, I believe he was asking John who had now taken Ben’s place as his messenger to help put things in motion to replace Jacob so the islands work could continue. I believe Jacob’s replacement was meant to be Christian Shepard. While not perfect, we have seen that he was a good man (wanting to be involved in Claire’s life in Australia, and funding her mom’s hospital stay, while he could have just said “not my problem”). If Christian was meant to be the “new jacob”, it would make sense that Jack would become his messenger. It was John’s job to keep Jack on the island and show Jack the truth of what the island was, so Jack would accept this new role. However, when Jack and company left the island and Ben “moved the island” the sky went purple again, potentially draining Christian of his life energy. With Christian “dying” and no strong ties to a messenger for him, the island is in disarray. John leaves the island to try to bring Jack back to help restore things. In leaving the island (which he loves so much) he has proven to the island that he is worthy of the promotion of island leader. Ben is aware of this fact, and knows that John must come back to preserve the island. When they all return, I believe John will not be physical, but will instead take over Jacob’s/Christian’s role, with Ben or Jack serving as his direct messenger.

I liked the part where John and Ben aren’t necessarily supposed to return. After all, Charlies ghost had this message for Jack: “You’re not supposed to raise him” possibly talking about raising Locke from the dead. And a vision of Claire told Kate: “Don’t you dare bring him back” possibly referring to Ben.
Claire’s message for Kate could be about Ben but I think it’s more likely to be about Aaron, not bringing him back to the island. But who knows, Darlton could throw anything at us.
i really like that idea lost481. also, does ben say aaron needs to return? i seem to remember him being left out of that for some reason…
Like it! I’ve never thought of the Swan affecting Jacob, but you could be on to something. +1
Ben says that “all of you” (all of the people that left the island) need to return, pretty sure there’s still a debate going on whether Aaron counts or not. It’s not just the oceanic 6 that have to go back though, I don’t think because Ben includes Locke and as far as we know, he isn’t one of the 6.
This is one of the most original theories I’ve come across in a long time. I really like it! +1
Wow, feeling the love here guys. Appreciate it. Lost4815162342, I never thought about the messages from Charlie and Claire possibly referring to John and Ben. Good catch.
