We’re here to watch, Jack - Cindy in “A Stranger in a Strange Land”

Lately I’ve been along these lines. I think that the island has a conciousness and is a god-like entity whose purpose is to guide and develop the human race, a lot like ‘The Monolith’ in Arthur C Clarkes 2001. I’m not saying it was put there by Aliens but that it is the highest and most powerful intelligence on earth and has always been there guiding humans towards their ultimate destiny, whatever that may be. It is to all intents and purposes the closest thing on Earth to God.
The island is acutely aware of mans greed and desire for power, and while the island has power in itself it can’t defend against every attempt man makes to exploit it, which is why since man started exploring the globe it recruited people who were capable of understanding its purpose to serve and protect it, these eventually became Ben’s people.
I believe that the island itself brought the DI to the island, purely to enable the Others to technologically advance themselves in order to protect the island from much bigger threats that would arrive in the future, namely Charles Widmore.
We have seen how the island is seemingly able to perform ‘miracles’ and bend reality to suit its designs, like when Michael tried to kill himself or when Locke fried Mikail on the sonic fence. I think that when the plane crashed certain passengers did infact die in the crash and were immediately resurrected by the island, and amongst those were the Oceanic 6, which is why the island whats them back as well as them still having ‘work to do’ they are also as Locke said ‘not supposed to leave’ or rather are not supposed to back in the real world as they are supposed to be dead.
I also think that this is what happened with Christian Shepard, Christian Shepard is now as alive as Jack is, but unlike Jack, Christian cannot view his survival as luck since he remembers dying. Jack survived the crash with just a minor injury and could easily rationalise his survival, as could Kate and Hurley and everybody else. The only people who know without a doubt that something extraordinary happened during the crash are the likes of Locke who was cured of his paralysis and Rose who was cured of cancer.
This is why Christian Shepard is now acting on Jacobs behalf, he knows the power of island and that it is more important than anything else in the world, and I believe that when he took Claire he told her the truth about her survival, i.e. that she didn’t survive and was revived by the island, or she possibly did survive and died when Keamys team fired a rocket into her house in Otherville.
The creators of the show once said that there were ‘Other others’ on the island not connected to Bens group and I think they might have been referring to people like Christian Shepard, revived dead people working in direct service to the island.
I think that the people the Others snatched after the crash were the people who did survive the crash and were deemed suitable to join Bens group. I think this because of what Cindy said to Jack in ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’, all the snatched tail section survivors crowded round Jacks cage as though they were looking at some kind of freak of nature and then Jack spoke with Cindy who said ‘We’re here to watch, Jack’ , I read this to mean ‘to watch and learn’, that is to say observe the islands power.

I really like this one. The idea that the ones on Jacobs list are the ones who actually survived the plane crash is great. So is Yemi resurrected? And I love you Janice.
I like this. I forgot about stewardess Cindy! Though I think her comment had something to do with the brainwashing station thingy in Room 23 cause she seemed kinda ‘out of it’. +1
I think this is a very good theory but I have a question. Why does it only revive certain people, if it does? Like Why Claire and Christian but not Boone, Shannon, Eko, Yemi etc? I have read some other theories that said the smoke “monster” kills people for a reason so I suppose in the case of Eko, he was killed by it but like I said, why only certain people? Why not Boone, Shannon, Yemi, Ana Lucia, Libby, Arzt, Nikki, Paolo, Charlie, the general that was escorting Kate, and so on, I won’t list all the deaths.
Yemi, I’m not sure how he fits in, he could be something different altogether as he didn’t seem like Yemi at all.
I’m not sure why Eko was killed either but it may have been because he was another person who did survive the crash but was found to be too unstable to join Ben’s group, if I remember right he killed two Others who tried to take him, also he ‘confessed’ this to Ben when he was imprisoned in ‘The Swan’, and we’ve since seen that Ben has at least a measure of control over the smoke monster so perhaps Ben had him killed in retaliation?
I think the island revives people because, like Michael they have ‘work to do’ and once the work is completed the island kill thems off again, for example Libby’s purpose could have been to prevent Hurley from jumping off the cliff, once she’d done that she was dispensible.
So the island is the highest form of intelligence on earth, it can resurrect people at will but cant stop them leaving? Sorry I don’t buy it.
Also Cindy was there to watch Juliets trial.
I like this one a lot too, +815.
I think people on the island die when there purpose is served.
Boone - helped John find the plane with the dynamite. The dynamite helped John get into the hatch. Once this was done so was he.
Shannon - helped Sayid to care again when he had lost his direction after turtoring Sawyer. She also lead Sayid to the Tailies in turn killing herself and causing internal conflict in Anna Lucia. Once this was done so was she.
Libby - Made Hurley feel like he was more than just the fat guy. This allowed Hurley to grow into the on-island character that he was when he saved Jin, Bernard and Sayid. Instead of being a follower Hurley turned into a part time leader. Once this was done so was she.
Anna Lucia - After killing Shannon she was changed. The original Anna we knew would have never given Michael the gun to kill Ben. She would have done it herself. Once this was done, so was she.
Ecko - Helped John find the ? hatch which in turn allowed John to free himself from the Swan. Once this was done so was Ecko.
As for the Oceanic Six leaving, I think the island allowed them to leave for two reasons. 1) The island knew of the dangers coming and wanted to ensure their safety for the future. 2) The only way they would truly believe in the islands powers was by leaving. Upon their return they will no longer question their “destiny”.
or maybe not…..
Lockexycodone that’s a very interesting idea and it seems like something the Lost producers would do but maybe not. I don’t know, it just seems like it would make sense if you think about it. Ben- although he didn’t really die that we know of- served his purpose on the island by turning the frozen wheel and now can’t get back (unless all of the oceanic 6 go back too.) anyway, good comment :)
Excellent post! Lockexycodone, very well put too!
I have to agree with Kevin Johnson that the Island is very much a greater power than anything else on Earth. This theory hooks into Mrs. Hawkings / Desmond, ” no matter what you do, you cant change destiny” They are ALL brought to this island for specific reasons, and it IS their destiny to be there.
One question I have is, Is Richard Alpert part of the “other” others? Is he the “actual” island? Where does he fit in? I love his character and I think he is THEE actual right hand of the island.
+10 for me!
I think that the people they didn’t take are protected by someone else… we never saw Ben going to the 815’s camp on the island… is it forbidden for him?
