The goal of the Dharma Initiative is to solve the Valenzetti equation and change the numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42) so as to prevent mankind’s extinction. All other Dharma experiments are merely a cover so as to keep any persons interested in bringing about the apocalypse away.

In order to solve this equation, they needed to travel into the future to figure out how man was going to die and who could stop it. Therefore a team of scientists including Richard and Jacob conducted time travel experiments.

After years of study, the team was ready to test their machine. With Richard at the controls, Jacob and his team stepped into the time machine. But something went wrong, one of the team members was holding a piece of metal. Now we are aware that by putting metal in the machine, a wrinkle in time and space is created.

This is why Ben and the polar bear in a previous episode are sent to the Sahara Desert and Ben eagerly asks at a Tunisian hotel what the year is. While dangerous, Ben was smart enough not to hop in the machine at the same time with the metal.Jacob and his team were not.

This team of scientists became caught between worlds. This is why their bodies like Jacob can not be seen in their true form but only heard. (aka the whispers) These split consciences however can be seen in the form of black smoke. Richard on the other hand survived the time traveling incident but with the odd side effect of not being able to age.

But back to the smoke people, they are still desperately trying to save the world. Have you noticed that the smoke was heard, before Patchy appeared, or that the hospital smoke detector went off when Christian’s Dad appeared to Jack after he left the island?

Like Desmond, after the incident the smoke people saw the future and how the world would end. Therefore, they are attempting to twist destiny in any way they can. Whether by whispers, like the ones heard before Ana Lucia shot Shannon, or in dreams, or by taking the form of a critical figures in each of the flight 815 survivors past, or by recruiting “others” to help in their cause.

By taking these forms, the scientists are attempting to reshape destiny. In this effort, the smoke team most notably recruited Ben. They took the form of his mother so he would go searching for her. Then he meets Richard in the jungle with the offer to become someone very special. Now after growing up hated by his father and treated like a piece dirt (remind you of Locke?), Ben like Locke jumped at the chance to join the “Hostiles or Others”. In doing so, the smoke people used him and all the 815 survivors to bring about a chain of events.

Jacob and the others gave Ben a list of which Locke was a part. Once Ben brought Locke, Walt, Cindy, and all those on the list except Aaron to Jacob, his main duty was fulfilled and he was no longer needed, but then something happened. A twist that the smoke people did not expect, Eko failed and Locke faltered. Eko did not complete his mission to convince Locke to keep pushing the button. Therefore, Widmore entered the picture. Having known and funded the lost experiments (including Ben and his fertility expertise), Widmore wanted the island back.

This obstacle, provided Ben with a new mission. His destiny now is to prevent Widmore from the reaching the island, since somehow, as believed by the smoke people, he (or maybe Penny) is unwittingly the bringer of the apocalypse.

Therefore, Ben’s work now is to fight off Widmore. To do so, Ben needs the help of the Oceanic 6. He needs them to go back, not just physically but in time, to prevent Locke from quitting on the button. They then must all enter the Temple and save the world.

I like it, good original thoughts! +1 But keep in mind that the smoke alarm wasnt’ going off due to smoke, the batteries were dieing and needed to be replaced. Got any idea’s of why the island was Widmore’s to begin with, like how he aquired it and whatnot? That still baffles me……

Now we are aware that by putting metal in the machine, a wrinkle in time and space is created.” Are we really aware of this? We know that metal is bad for the machine but who ever said it creates a wrinkle in time and space?

I think your theory hinges on this and I don’t think it’s a fact. At least it’s not something that we know. I think the smoke monster is important and it’s probably trying to do something like what you’re saying but I really don’t buy that it’s jacob and his team that died in some freak time-travel accident.

Ah ha! Dharma wanted to time travel so they could go to the future, figure out how man-kind ends, and then work back to change it. Wonderful observation. +1

I couldn’t agree more! Except, I think the Valenzetti equation is just a peice of what they are trying to solve. Like in the movie 12 monkeys, I really think there is a virus causing the end to human kind. I think this virus has and will be tested on the island and survival is what humans use the test subjects on.

I don’t think putting metal inside the vault creates a wrinkle in space time. It just busted out the back of the chamber and allowed Ben to get to the source of the Casimir-inducing power on the island.

so, you state that the “incident” (ie, people becoming black smoke) was caused by putting metal in the device, & that ben was smart enough not to be in the device at the time. but then you state that after this “incident” the smoke-people recruited ben. so was ben there when they were turned into smoke-people or was he only recruited afterwards? this doesn’t make any sense to me.

also, ben wasn’t sent to tunisia because they put metal in the machine. they put metal in the machine to blow the device they had built to hide the donkey wheel. turning that wheel moves ben to tunisia, not the metal in the device.
