The sand represents the island The compass represents that you always know where you are The Book of Laws represents being a leader The knife represents being a hunter
— Pez123
First Locke chooses the sand in the little jar. Then Locke chooses the compass. Then Locke thinks about choosing the Book of Laws, but instead chooses the knife.
Richard makes a little smile when Locke is looking at the Book of Laws, but is upset when John chooses the knife. Richard knew that John was capable of being a leader.
The sand represents the island The compass represents that you always know where you are The Book of Laws represents being a leader The knife represents being a hunter
If John had chose the first three items (sand, compass and then Book of Laws), Richard would have known Locke could have been a leader.

So you’re theory is that John isn’t a leader?
No, I didnt say that. What I think is that maybe John was never meant to be with the Others like he is now.
He didnt choose the Book of Laws because he wasnt ready, but Richard thought otherwise.
