From watching all the bonus features on the Season 3 DVD’s, I learned that Stephen King is a favourite author of the creators. I’m a fan myself. ;)
Here’s a quote from The Stand that struck me funny:
“The first monitor showed only a digital clock. Until June 13, all the numbers on that clock had been green. Now they had turned bright red. They had stopped. The figures read 06:13:90:02:37:16. June 13, 1990. Thirty-seven minutes past two in the morning. And sixteen seconds. From behind him came a brief burring noise.” In The Stand this set of numbers, 06:13:90:02:37:16, marks the date that the plague was released upon mankind, causing its decimation.
Looks kind of like our numbers, no?

Look at the numbers this way:
04:08:15:16:23:42
They now translate to a specific date and time: April 8, 2015 at 4:23:42PM, the date the world will end.
Maybe what Jack is REALLY tired of lying about is the fact that he already knows the world is doomed and he can’t change it because he left the island … the last safe place for mankind. Staying on the island would have saved him from ever having to witness world’s end, whatever form it comes in.
If it is in the form of a virus, then perhaps DHARMA was/is searching for an immunity factor which is why they insisted upon injecting every member with a “vaccine”. Oh my gosh…I’m having a ‘12 Monkeys’ moment which is leading me to think that The Island….

Molly—That is an Excellent Idea—that what Jack is tired of lying about is that he knows the world is doomed and can’t change it. That would explain his guilt and his desperation to get back. I like it.
JJ Abrahams certainly loves mysterious numbers.
He even agreed to make the Dark Tower by Stephen King into a movie or tv series for 19 dollars, which is the major magic number in that book!

I like this a lot. So if the island is in the future then when Desmond turned the failsafe key, this event could have triggered the end of the world event.
My one question for you is, if the end of the world is on that date, why pick those numbers to enter into the hatch computer for so many “island years”?
This is good because it uses the numbers and ropes in Stephen King. When it comes to Lost theories, those are good avenues to steer down.
However, haven’t the numbers been verified as an equation (a fictional, meaningless equation in the real world, but a meaningful one in Lost) by the Lost Experience? Don’t we have our definition of the numbers?
Still, they are an equation that supposedly calculates the end of humanity so, if it turns out they also spell out the time… No, actually, I think that would be too obvious! It’s a complicated equation that spells out mankind’s doom - imagine the head-slapping “Doh!” moment when the scientists realised it was just a date and time!

It explains a lot about Jacks flashforward and the numbers. Maybe thats why the person in the casket killed himself. He just got tired of waiting for the end. I hope we have that Dharma D’oh! moment because I always hoped the big mysteries would be explained simply with that “Why didn’t I see it coming?” slap in the face

The numbers don’t have to “be” the date, they just go into the equation and produce “a” date, sometime in the future. The theory still works. +1.
Maybe the losties’ parents are aware of our earth’s fate and the island (in the future) and arrange for them to get there and then destroy the “portal”?
Thank you for all of your comments and insights. I know that it is a huge leap of faith to think the island is in the future. But for me, its starting to shed a little light on some things, especially if the end of the world (as we know it…gawd I love that song;) is tied to a man-made virus (Alvar Hanso arms dealer, perhaps bio-weapons?)
Perhaps Ben saying “this will be the beginning of the end” wasn’t a broad statement. Perhaps he was saying that directly to Jack as if to communicate, “this will be the beginning of the end FOR YOU JACK.”

To throw a little wrinkle into your theory MollyCocktail…the “15” doesn’t necessarily have to mean 2015. Could be 1915 or 1815…maybe some significant event or discovery happened at that time. Just a thought.
It would be just like those sneaky writers to do something like that ! Your idea is quite plausible.
Good idea, this definately could be possible.
So, Jack being depressed in future is because he knows the world is going to end. And Ben saying, “God can’t see this island, “(or something like that) means the world has already been destroyed. Ms. Hawking showing Desmond the guy that gets killed and telling him, “That was his fate, he was supposed to die,”(or something like that) is alluding to mankind’s downfall. And perhaps the Swan imploding sent them back to the present day, thus making it Penny’s contact and the freighter’s arrival possible. It could all fit, MC.
I wonder if the same knowledge could have been what turned Jack’s dad to alcohol, and some burden passed from father to son.

MC, one thing that could counter your theory is that the date and time show up on the “System Failure” printout in Desmond’s flashback. Although, one could argue that the electromagnetic anomaly created a wormhole of sorts to the past, and the Swan computer was able to document the date and time that corresponded to that wormhole. (I think I just gave myself a headache)
Stephen King kicks ass…they must write together…
But not a weird thought about the numbers….but my guess; it’s something like: duhhhhhh……we didn’t see it….or something we just never could have guessed….

that is a VERY good theory. this is one that i could easily stick with and believe until proof of it being wrong came up. if this is true about jack, that would explain ALOT about why he so desperately NEEDS to get off the island…but then i go back to the fast forward recently where he is VERY depressed and desperately wants to GO BACK….confusing stuff.

makes sense.. except for the fact of why kate would have taken claire’s son off the island.. to die in ten years? Or even if it is her baby why would she not want to go back so her child wouldn’t die…?
this is a good call however this has kind of all beenexplained before with the vallenzeti equation during the lost experience web game.

That sounds very plausible, it would explain why their so concerned with solving the problem of birth on the island. No use having the safe haven for mankind if you can’t use it to repopulate.

Love this one.. +1 all the way… One question…what is the meaning of the heiroglyphics that were displayed when the Numbers were not entered into the computer? And the I-ching symbols used for each of the Initiative’s stations? These are obviously ancient cultural references…I wonder what the significance of these are, and why Dharma would still be using these symbols hundreds and hundreds of years in the future?

i think this is a very interesting theory but can someone please explain how the island can be in the future? how much further in the future? i’m just not putting all the pieces together. everytime i think i have it, my brain craps out.

I noticed on “Meet Kevin Johnson,” Michael was watching Jeopardy or some other quiz show and the answer was Kurt Vonnegut, author of “Slaughterhouse 5.” So, we have seen references in some form to Joseph Heller, C.S. Lewis, Stephen King, Vonnegut and various other figures in the scientific field as well as the bible. These guys are well educated and are throwing many more ideas into what they have already been inspired by. Many of us will try to figure out what is what; some of us will die. Maybe one or two of us will figure it out.

I love what you said about Jack being sick of lying because the world is coming to an end. This is a great idea. However, I don’t fully understand how the island could be in the future. Could you elaborate on this idea?

read this somewhere …. i might explain this wrong so sorry in advance ….. in the orcid video they show a time lapse and now 2 rabbits right say dharma did make a time machine it wouldn’t be very strong …. needing (you guessed it electromagnitism) it would set the time about say 108 minutes … (not to much fun) but reseting the time machine everytime the lapse ends would slowly move it an extra 108 minutes apart from the correct time … so the island would be roughly 14 years in the future (from how long we know the button is being pressed)

Here is what I think, but am probably totally wrong:
The island is in the future, so Jack has to time travel to the past to get off the island? If he time travels to the past can he just not time travel to the future to get back to the island?

I like the theory of the numbers tranlating to a date but you might be looking at it all wrong. If you have ever gotten somthing with a date from other parts of the world they put the year first unlike the standard for the USA example you say 4-08-15 meaning April 8, 2015 for the future but what about 04-08-15 meaning August 15, 2004 in the past. Does that date ring a bell with anyone?
Good idea, I stuck with MollyCocktail’s interpretation and - tipped off by vegarover’s comment about it possibly being 1915/1815/… - came up with an interesting event: the “biggest volcanic eruption in modern history”, on an island called Sumbawa. I’m not fully convinced by my own entailing theory :)

I’m not buying that ‘the world is going to end’ thing. The numbers could mean a date, but also it could mean something else… Like a bank account or something like that.. Maybe the numbers have to do something with the money that Miles asked from Ben in 4th serial. I don’t know why 3.2 million, but maybe Hurley’s bad luck numbers are a bank account! Also, I don’t think the world end is the reason why Jack wants to go back to the island so badly. He just feels frustrated and bad because of the people he left behind. If you ask me, either all of them was to be rescued or none…
I am skeptical of your theory because there is absolutely no evidence that this is indeed what jack is sick of lyeing about, we already know hes sick of lyeing about the others because he wants to go back there to save them,jack isnt the kind of person who would leave someone behind but he was forced to when the island dissapeared.
I think you could be on to something here. I mean Hugo used those numbers to win the lottery and it turned his life into hell. Along with that guy who was in the mental institution with him. They are very unlucky so to speak. So it the numbers are some sort of curse or doomsday kind of thing could that be a sign as to why all of those things happened to hugo? idk
