In 4.05 (The Constant) when Desmond is looking for Penny, he goes to an auction to ask Penny’s father about her address. In the auction Mr Widmore buys a log from the Black Rock, previously owned by Tovard Hanso (Hanso = Dharma Initiative?) From 4.05 (sorry my English): “The “black rock” sailed from Portsmouth, England on march 22nd 1845 on a mission to the kingdom of Siam when she was tragically lost in sea. The only known artifact of this journey is the journal of the ship’s first mate which was discovered among the artifact of pirates L’Ile Snte Marie, Madagascar, seven years later, the contents of this journal has never been made public nor are known to any outside the family of the seller, Tovard Hanso”
My theory is that Mr Widmore bought the log in 1996 because he is trying to find the island. The boat in the shore is his team. The Tovard Hanso & family started Dharma Initiative thanks to this journal or at least found the island using it. I guess Hanso’s wife is selling the book (sitting on first row at the end of the above speech) because it caused her husband’s death. What do you think?

Interesting about the wife—I’m not sure who Tovard Hanso is—I believe that Alvar Hanso is the munitions magnate who funded Dharma…I personally believe the Richard will end up being a Hanso—perhaps the one who captained the Black Rock…
What I don’t get is, how did The Black Rock end up in the South Pacific? It was heading for Siam (Thailand) from England. Wouldn’t the best route be around the southern tip of Africa and then east to the Indian Ocean? Oceanic 815 crashed on The Island when heading from Sydney to LA. The Island is at least close to their intended flight path. Furthermore, where was the plane Yemi was on headed from Nigeria? Was The Island anywhere near their flight path?
SomeArztOnYou, I think you have a point. Where was the polar bear that Charlotte found on the desert? anywhere near Black Rock’s route? Actually it was in Tunisia. The journal was found seven years later near Madagascar, which also makes little sense. Also remember that the Black Rock seems to have been attacked by pirates, so it could have ended anywhere while escaping or after everyone on the ship was killed by the pirates.
Wait… Set sail in 1845? With a bunch of Dynamite? I found with a quick net search that Alfred Nobel didn’t invent dynamite untill 1866. Before then black powder was used. And we know this to be dynamite from the episode “Numbers”. You think the writers did this on purpose or is the year 1845 another clue?
The provenance of the journal could be false.
I bet she’s selling it so that someone else can try to succeed where Dharma failed. Someone a little… meaner? Maybe the Widmores are avenging the Hansos? This, of course, would assume that they know each other and the auction is a sham. How else could you explain why Mrs. Hanso would ever part with a family treasure? Unless she doesn’t know how important it is…
