I don’t know much about physics or electro-magneism. Then again I don’t know if the show follows the rules of either.
First of all I believe that Widmore is behind a lot of this whole island business. Or atleast has first rate knowledge of the island. I also believe that they have always known where the island is. They might have lost communication with it, but I believe that they have always known where it was. I say this because of two things 1.) A lot of money is assumingly invested into the island, why make it so you cant find it if something goes wrong. 2.) I don’t believe that GPS doesn’t work around the island. All you have to know is the coordinates of something and GPS can lead you there. What I believe happened was, they (Widmore and his croonies) know that something bad happened because communication was lost, or someone leaked what happened on the island. They were interested in coming back when they saw Ben Linus walking around seemingly unharmed and they (Widmore and his croonies) assumed it was safe to return. The only thing to thwart this idea is Miles saying that they have put alot of time into finding Ben. Although Miles may not know the whole truth, only what was told to him.
Penny, I believe, working for her father has picked up lit bits and pieces of information that relate to the island. She has been looking for Electro-magnetic anomalies in the pacific after all. And why has she been looking? For Desmond right? Maybe she found out that her father had something to do with Desmond disappearing and figured the island was the best place to look.
I have seen evidence supporting time travel (Faradays time clocks) and evidence supporting no time travel (the calendar on the ship seems to match the percieved Island date (Christmas)). My explanation for this is…the time difference happenes when something travels throuh the strong electo-magnetic fields surrounding the island. Imagine, a wave that goes from pole to pole, and depending on how you travel through those poles, time may vary. It may be shorter, longer, or perhaps nothing has changed at all. This I think is supported by Sayids statement about the time of day that changed while in the helicopter, but the day on the ship doesn’t seem to be different from the day on the island. (christmas).
You are probably able to leave the island going any direction, but it is safer, and the electro-magnetic field is weakest around the pole (bearing 325). I also believe that when it was said that if you try to leave, you will just be traveling in circles; its because of the storms and the poles throwing a compass off.
Also, I believe that the electro-magnetic poles generate some sort of radar jammer. That is why it hasn’t been found by anyone else. On purpose.
Also, I don’t know what to think about Aaron, Jack, kate, and Claire but…..I honestly don’t think that guilt would keep Jack from Kate. His need for Kate overrode his desire to get off of the island. Wouldn’t interacting with both Hurley and Kate trigger the same memories as seeing Aaron. Especially Kate, after all she is raising Aaron and he has no qualms seeing her.
Anyways that it what I can think of right now. Please comment. It has been awhile since I have seen the early episodes and perhaps I forgot something.
