The Others get knowladge and understanding of time travel, or at least, some of them (Michael, Ben, Jacob…). That is how they know everything about everyone - including intimate details about everyone’s past. How else would they know about John’s connection with Sawyer, Anna Lucia’s murder, and everybody’s past good & bad history - Things that no one told anyone, and would not appear in any record…
There are a lot of things yet to understand in the show, but I’m pretty sure I understood this one.

This idea would make Mikhail’s function in The Flame for gathering information somewhat redundant. Therefore Ben didn’t need to go and tell him to get information about the passengers. Therefore he wouldn’t have done it.
But he did do it. Which suggests he needed to do it. Which suggests Mikhail was required to gather information the conventional way, rather than time travel.
Dilemma. I totally agree with both of you.
