Faraday doesn’t KNOW that electromagnetism or radiation causes “unstuck in time” - it’s just what he believes. TheREAL reason it’s happening is that they’re using the wrong headings into and out of the island!

I posted a theory earlier today about the sub being used by The Others for the reason that it was impervious to weather conditions and could keep a perfect heading no matter the conditions. See theory: http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2008/feb/29/now-its-clear-why-others-used-/
Now let’s talk a bit more…
about the headings!
I think we all cocked our heads a bit when Frank was told by Faraday to keep heading 305 no matter what.
Last we knew it was 325, at least that’s what Ben told Michael when he let him go on the boat.
I didn’t think much of it, until “Fliptz” posted in my “sub theory” about the 20 degree difference showing up on the compass earlier between Jack and Sayid. (or was it John and Sayid? Doesn’t matter - it was there)
Of course, that could easily explain the difference between the 325 and 305 - EXCEPT both vessels used to leave were above-water (see sub theory) so that’s no good.
So putting my sub theory on the back burner, my new theory is the following:
“The Freighties” have found another bearing to leave the island from: 305. Too bad for them this one is nowhere near as “stable” as the 325 bearing The Others use.
What I feel has been shown, no - proven - last night (S4E5 - The Constant) is that there is not just one way to enter or leave the space of the island, the trick is knowing which bearing to use that won’t potentially screw up members of the crews that use it!
Now, I know Faraday said that being unstuck in time could be a cause of being near heavy radiation or electromanetism, so if that’s true, why isn’t Rose acting the same way as Desmond? If you know (or don’t know) the cancer treatment routine, you get nailed with a TON of radiation before they put you on chemo (Rose had no hair in her flashbacks, so she obviously had radiation treatment prior).
So my entire theory is the following: Faraday doesn’t KNOW that electromagnetism or radiation causes “unstuck in time” - it’s just what he believes. The real reason it’s happening is that they’re using the wrong headings into and out of the island! Desmond would have been fine if 2 things happened, they took the submarine (were it not exploded) AND headed out on bearing 325.
Good, no good - give me your worst! :-)
p.s. - will the site admins PLEASE update the episode dropdowns? None of S4 is in there! (or am I just blind?)

Very nice…..But, we all have to wait to see what happened to Micheal and Walt at the 325 bearing………Who knows what happens there…
Also…+1 for bringing up the EP drops!!!! And for your theory, of course!!
According to my calculations, going north 305° for 40 miles and then east 7 miles, is the same as going 315° north. That makes me think that Daniel Faraday missed right and left (or going and returning)… he should have said: 40 miles 325 north, and 7 miles west, and the helicopter would have found the same point, and it would have been the right bearing.
given that the sub is blown up. Why was locke soaked!!! did you see a sub explode?
However… there is undersea weather. It’s called currents, upwelling, downwelling, etc. Any boater can tell you that fighting a strong current can be very tricky. After having successfully piloted Sam Thomas’ ROV around the reefs against strong currents in search of the Black Rock, I can agree.
The “confusion” caused in some by transport to the Island is why Alpert drugged Juliet.
brilliant +1
that gets rid of the Free Lunchbox paradox that was bothering me.
