I’m new to the site as a contributor. I have been reading many of the theories for some time. It wasn’t until recently that I have noticed some developments on the show that just scream out at me. I give credit to anyone who has posted a similar theory or anything related to this topic. I hope to site them, if I miss anyone, please let me know.
Let’s look at the big picture of Hurley. Through flashforwards we have established the he was in a mental ward suffering from the perceived negative effects of having discovered “the numbers”, playing them in the lottery and winning. An event that most would associate with tremendous good fortune has turned tragic for Hurley. People die, fall, crash, etc. until he is convinced he is cursed. Then he decides to investigate the source of the numbers as told to him by his mental ward buddy(name escapes me). This leads to him being on Flight 815 and ultimately the Island.
However, this is when things begin to change for him. Gradually, we see Hurley involved in more ot the storyline. He often appears to be the only source of reason in conflicts between the survivors. Tragidy still follows him occasionaly, as in the death of Libby and seaming end of Charlie. However, this is where the light bulb went on for me.
At the end of season 3, “in Through the Looking Glass”, Hurley plays a major role in the series of events that lead to saving Jin, Sayid and Bernard on the beach. In typical fashion, Hurley secretly follows Saywer and Juliette. Sawyer insults him when he sees Hurley, tells him he’s basically to out of shape to help and tells him to go back. But, he doesn’t. He takes matters into his own hands, gets the Van and runs the gauntlet like Clint Eastwood and saves the day. He is proud of himself. He boasts to Jack on the walkie at the beginning of season 4 and says, “I did it, I saved them!” He is He is releaved and at that moment he fells a sense of purpose. All those years of sadness and tragedy replaced by sheer joy and accomplishment. He is so happy, he tells Bernard he is going to jump into the ocean. When he does (by the way that was a tremendous scene with outstanding camera work) we can see the joy and relief on his face.
Then, after thinking his life had finally changed for the better, he is greeted by Desmonds return and the information that Charlie was killed in the underwater station. Hurley, is devastated. However, something begins to change. He takes control over the conversation about what they are going to do, throws the walkie-talkie in the ocean and says follow me. In subsequent episodes, a series of events starts to unfold that I believe will change his role as we no it today. He gets seperated from the group and stumbles upon Jacob’s cabin. He sees Christian Shepard in the rocking chair and then part of a face in the window. He freaks out and thinks he’s going crazy again. He closes his eyes, wishes the cabin away and it seems to disappear. Locke stubles across him. By the way, I don’t think that was Lockes’ face in the window, I think he was looking for the cabin but it wasn’t where he usually found it, but more on that later. Later, when the group is reunited and thens splits between Jack and Locke, Hurley goes with Locke. Why? I believe he is starting to think he might have a greater role in the grand scheme of things and Locke appears to have more answers right now. He lets Locke us him has bait to capture Sayid and Kate. Plus, Locke has always respected Hurley, he calls him by his given name of Hugo. Also, Hurley knows Locke was looking for something in the jungle the night he found him.
Over the next two episodes, season 4 3&4, I believe, several strange things are revealed. When Locke informs his group that he needs to look for a cabin, Hurley thinks they are going the wrong way. Both Locke and Ben seem very surprised by this. I believe that’s why when they finally get to where the cabin is supposed to be, it’s not there. Hugo knows there in the wrong place. He has now been revealed as the one, or next, person that is supposed to communicate with Jacob. Locke and Ben suspect something is wrong but don’t understand it yet, at least Locke doesn’t. Where did the cabin go? I suspect the mysterious properties of the island have caused it to shift its existence. Faraday’s comment that the light doesn’t scatter quite right and the establishment of some sort of time discrepency indicate that the cabin may have changed or perceived to change it’s location. Also, its possible that Jacob has finally made contact with the one person that can put it all together and in the end save everyone. Therefore he is hiding it from Locke and Ben. Therefore, Jacob may want exclusivity with Hurley.
In addition, we see the future Hurley, back in the mental ward. We don’t know yet what happens to Hurley on the island before he leaves. Does Jacob reveal himself to Hurley? Does he discover more, until then unknown, facts about the island and its people? Are these the things that start him to doubt his sanity again? In the future, he is visited by “dead, but I’m here Charlie. Charlie tells him he has to go back, “they need you”. Abaddon asks him what happened to the rest of them? Are they alive?
When Hurley discovered the cabin, he saw Christian Sheppard in the chair. Why Christian? Do we soon discover that Christian isn’t really dead? Does he become one of the Oceanic 6? Sorry, but I had to get that one in here, because it’s still a long shot educated guess of mine. Actually, there are several things that make it a possibility,1. Jack’s comments at the end of last season about his father being upstairs, 2. Early in season 1, I think, Christian gave Jack a watch and said it was his grandfathers. That his grandfather was a great man and one day, Jack would be too. 3. No body in the casket. I could go on. Anyway, eventually, Jack comes to visit Hurley in the hospital. Hugo apologizes for going with Locke and says they have to go back. “They need us”. Jack is agitated by the comment and says never. Hurley then says the famous, “never say never dude”. To me, this is all very significant.
I’ll attemt to wrap it up here. Whatever happens to Hurley on the island before they leave will be Eye opening for him. He may think he’s going crazy at the time, but it will make sense to him down the road. I think he will discover that Locke doesn’t have all the answers. Locke means well and is a man of tremendous faith, but is not the “salvation”. He will learn that jack is a man of facts and science and is trying to do the right thing, in his heart, although he doesn’t really understand things. I believe Jack will discover some things that are supernatural in nature and not be able to explain them rationally. This will be the start of his drinking and depression, althought he will live in denial until Hurley’s pep talk. Hurley, after the visits from Charlie and Abbadon, will start to put things together. By the time Jack visits him, he knows that he and most/all of the Oceanic 6 have to go back. Telling that to Jack, leads him to thinking about it a lot. As seen in last seasons first flash forward, Jack will soon be convinced they have to go back, but he will be unable to figure out how. Meaningless round trips across the ocean in an attempt will drive him to depression and eventually the brink of suicide. I think Hurley will figure out the way to get back. I think it will have something to do with the numbers. Or, he will figure out who knows how to get them back. In the final episodes of the last season, Hurley will be the ultimate man of reason and sanity. He will put together the pieces between Lockes’ faith based assumptions and Jack’s and many others scientific, fact based assumptions and figure it all out. The man who has been protrayed as unstable, fat, insane, always in the way of those “in the Know”, will, in the end, be the true hero and salvation for everyone. Hurley will find the sanity among the many irrational, supernatural, and scientific based characteristics of the island. He will discover who is trying to protect the island and why. And of course, who is trying to exploit it. Ultimately, he will figure out the meaning of it all and how they fit into it.
Whew!, I’m done.
Please feel free to comment, add or shoot down anything I’ve said. If you have posted anything similar to this, please let me know in your comments as I simply haven’t had time to read everything lately.
3/14/08 AAAHH! He’s back in the future. I think we saw last night after episode 4.7 that Hurley is indeed going to be a major part of the future episodes. He shows up at Sun’s door, looking spiffy and clearly out of the “looney” bin. His comment that he’s glad no one else had come leads me to believe that he has indeed started figuring things out and is taking charge of the situation in the flashfowards. Also, I don’t believe Jin is dead. This has been echoed on here many times today. What’s going to be interesting to find out is how does Hurley become one of the “6” since he is currently at Locke’s camp. I believe we are about to see a plan launched by Hurley to get some or all of the Oceanic 6 back to the island, because he has clearly figured some things out since we last saw him in a flash foreword.

Sorry about all the spelling errors. I typed out this whole thing once, but when I attempted to submit it I go an error message. I had to start from scratch, and as you can see, I got a little windy. I went too fast and made the cardinal error of not checking it. I need to go soon and wanted to make sure it worked. Hope you can understand what I was trying to say.
Wayne7554
that was a pretty good, broad based theory. Congrats +1
I would lean toward this theory…it makes sense and I have also noticed Hurley’s role changing…good thought!
We always plus GOOD theories on this site! Please remember that people!
Wayne, I think you have done a really good job on your theory, and make legitimate points and observations as well. I do think Hurley gains insight, and I do believe Jack’s depression is a result of his “on island” experiences, however I believe it is when they leave “the island”, when it becomes poignant for them!
Excellent job! +1
Should you care to read some individual theorists, who have posted very good theories on the site, I will mention a few. I realize I am leaving people out, please don’t be offended if, I have.
ProfOzone, Katrinicity, Risebysin, Athiest Christ, Occam, Crazy Polar Bear, to mention a few. There are many, many more! A very good start!
Wayne, Welcome, this is a very good first theory. I like seeing someone giving Hurley the credit he deserves. Jorge Garcia, was the first actor to be cast for Lost. I really think his character has gotten stronger with each season.
To have him become the “ultimate man of reason and sanity “in the end, as you have stated would be fantastic.I have always believed that Hurley will ultimately prove to be a very important element to the complete story. +1
Katesawjack, dabiatchishere, tonnster and lockeko- thanks for the comments and positive feedback. I will be sure to read the many good theories you suggest and others including your dabiatchishere. I look forward to becomming more involved with the site.
Wayne, welcome and Namaste
Namaste indeed!
Hi Wayne and welcome. I agree that Hurley is becoming more and more important and I’m pleased he’s not just the fat guy there for light relief. I like the idea that Hurley’s approach to decision-making is a balance or counterpoint to Jack and Locke’s extremes, but I don’t agree that this approach is based on reason or rationality. The majority of his actions, including ones you mention, are motivated instead by a very human/emotional instinct , e.g. fixing up the Dharma van, throwing the walkie into the sea, salvaging the ping-pong table, going with Team Locke, refusing to ration the food from the Swan, following Sawyer & Juliette back to the beach, etc. etc.
Ben did say that you don’t go to see Jacob, he summons you. So obviously, he summoned Hurley for a reason. I like Hurley as the Hero too. +1
sounds very interesting and it’s good for hurley :) i like him. +1!
Nice read Wayne! I especially liked it because I love Hurley, he’s the man! +1, I would love to see him play a significant role down the road, the underdogg come from behind win kind of thing!
Very interesting and likely, especially if it is true that Jorge was the first casted. Means his role might have been the one most important for the show and they wanted to make sure they picked the right person for the right role.
very niiiice +1 for Hugo Reyes!
wayne, welcome to the site and congrats on one great first theory!
+1 I love Hurley too and the fact that he is changing and becoming more important to the story as a whole is great move on the writer’s part. I think part of that change started when he came charging in with the Dharma van, but the real change took over when he learned of Charlie’s death. I can’t wait to see the rest of Hurley’s story.
Great first theory, keep posting!!
AL,Those are my thoughts too, that there must have been a very good reason, why Jorge Garcia was the first person to be cast.
Good stuff for a first post. (Tip: Write them in notepad or word and then copy and paste here; prevents the ‘lost’ error you encountered!)
I think Hurley’s importance amongst the Losties is worth mentioning. I am thinking specifically of that moment when Sawyer wanted to beat Ben to a pulp and, with a shake of the head, Hurley pretty much stayed Sawyer’s hand. Sawyer looked to Hurley for guidance - that’s a major turnaround!
I did what you did… Forgot the +1
Thanks everyone for all the nice comments. AngeloComet-thanks for the tip on copy and paste. I will definately do that next time. Love that spell check!!
Also, great comment about Hurley dictating Sawyers action against Ben. I think thats another very telling moment. Can’t wait until tomorrow night.
I just read a comment by Kryptonian in the Jacob Reveal theory by WilliamWonka. They were talking about the eye that Hurley saw looking back at him through the window and they thought the eye looked like Hurley’s. Whoa! That would put an interesting twist on the whole time travel/cashimere effect stuff. Here are some screen shots. http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Image:JacobEye4x01-wide.jpg

Welcome aboard Wayne,
Here’s a post I created for people who are relatively new to the site: http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/jul/14/i-can-always-spot-newbies/
Among the links is one to a great in-browser spell check utility for Internet Explorer: http://www.iespell.com/download.php It sure beats copying and pasting.
Great theory. I look forward to more. Plus uno.
Well thought and well written!! Nice job!! +1
Thanks for all the tips and links sham, if I may call you sham. I hate to get too informal right off the bat! Seriously, I appreciate all the help. I don’t have a lot of time during the week to spend here and that will certainly speed things up for me.
No problem wayne and calling me “sham” is fine. If you use Firefox like me, you can add an extension or add-on for the spell check utility: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:3 It does the same thing as iSpell.
Yeah I think you’re right, except for one thing.
I believe that the s4e7 flash forward (hurley visiting sun) happened before he got crazy. There is a theory that states that every flashforward is closer and closer to the present that seems right. So Hurley proably goes crazy sometime after he visits Sun.
I think Hurley was the first actor cast for any part so maybe it is focused around him? I could be wrong.
Great read…I love Hurley, great character!
i hope your right it seems to me that Hurley is the only one on the island that is truely pure. everyone elses has at one point or another made bad decisions, but poor hurley just has bad things happen to him. Hurly the hero ftw :-)
if youll notice. right after hurley announces he is going and starts walking, ben tell locke “good job john. he actually thought coming was his idea” or something along those lines. basically, theyre playing him for a fool. i think we would all like to see hurley save the day, and he probably will from time to time as the show progresses, but i do not believe that he is the significant character of the show. he is merely the nice guy that keeps everyone in line and happy, a very simple character. interesting theory though.
