in season 2 episode 3 ‘orientation’
Jack and Desmond meet and Desmond recognises Jack
later on in this episode Locke makes a comment to Jack he says something like
(‘ you’re upset because he thinks he knows you
…… ‘because that would be impossible’!!!!!
why would it be impossible that Jack met Desmond at the stadium?
they met in 2000 Desmond was training for the boat race,Jack had done that operation on Sarah- so I really don’t get what Locke is saying
Desmond began the boat race in 2001
does anyone else know any reason why they couldn’t have met?
Because Jack is a man of science - he doesn’t believe in fate or destiny.
You may recall the conversation Locke had with Jack on numerous times (in Season One, right up to the finale of Season Four), where Locke tries to tell Jack that it is their destiny to be on the Island.
Jack refutes that idea entirely. And so having someone from his life turn up on this Island that he believes he wound up on entirely by accident works against the principle of random chance.
Imagine it. You crash land on a desert island that has only a handful of people on it, and then find a work colleague or an old schoolfriend was already there - wouldn’t that just freak you out?
I always took it that this was Locke’s way of encouraging Jack to have some faith in his destiny. Of everyone in the world he meets a Scottish bloke in a stadium in America and again on a tropical island. What are the chances? This is another way for Locke to play the ‘coincidence or destiny?’ line.
What AC said.
I should have hit refresh first.
The main reason for Jacks transition from a man of science(s1-s4) to a man of faith(s5-s6), is when he got off the island he was able to reacquaint himself with lovely alcohol. This opened his mind and removed the rod from his ass.
Don’t ever let anyone tell you it is wrong to drink, some of the most memorable, most fun things you will ever do are whilst under the influence.
yeah see what you mean Locke was being a tad sarcastic/taking the mick,I get it
I just watched the movie contact and it reminds of this. The movie is basically faith vs. science, what you believe vs. what you can prove
So Jack gets off the island and starts drinking then somehow later gets back to the island. Is the rod that came out of his ass the black thing we see next to his head in the pilot episode?
