There has been a lot of speculation revolving around the fact that Ben was wearing a cold-weather parka in the Sahara desert. Many think that this means he was expecting to show up somewhere cold, like the Arctic. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone point this out yet - sorry if someone has - but it’s gets very cold in the desert at night.

I submit that Ben knew exactly WHERE he would show up, but maybe not exactly WHEN. He wore the coat in case he showed up at that spot during the night.

As others have pointed out, other than the parka he really wasn’t dressed for cold weather. I think his outfit made sense for a person who knew they were headed to a desert, but weren’t sure if it would be day or night when they got there.

This would actually make sense. Additionally, if Ben anticipated arriving at night, only to find himself there in daytime, he was obviously off the mark for arival time. He wouldn’t know if just a few hours off or ?? That could be why he inquired about the date.

I’m still thinking about the fact that he was cold upon arrival though. It could be due to his departure location, but it seems like he would have also had boots, etc then. I’m still thinking about the coldness in the vacuum of space, and wondering if the teleportation might involve something similar.

Regardless, the parka for a cold night in the desert is a good idea.

    Fair point.

Though, given the blast of steamy breathe that accompanied his first moments of appearance on the ground, I still suspect he came from someplace cold, or the journey itself was chilly.

I don’t think they sell alot of parkas for those cold desert nights. I do agree that maybe Ben didn’t know exactly when he would show up, he might have been afraid of showing up at a time when the Sahara was covered by glaciers.

My thougts exactly… When ben appeared lying in the desert he exhaled a cold breath, also his boots seemed to have a snow- like cover so I thik he was in a cold place before… The desert cold nights explanation also just make perfect sense! well thought, Ben!!!

Yes, if the parka was intended for the journey and not the destination, then the point is moot.

But in that case, there’s still no evidence he didn’t know WHERE he would show up.

lockeko: Don’t you think if he thought he might be dropped in a true arctic setting with glaciers his pants would have been a little inadequate? And seriously, the temperature in the Sahara desert goes below freezing at night… sounds like you didn’t believe me.

My guess is the margin of time error in his method of travel is not so drastic - days or weeks - but enough so that he wasn’t sure if it would be nighttime.

good point about the pants Ben, I just don’t think it’s really cold enough to justify a parka. Whatever happened to the parka anyway? Did he just leave it in the desert?

Yeah, I think he just threw it on the ground.

Ben, I do not believe the parka was worn to afford warmth from the cold of where Ben ended up.

I believe the parka was worn in protection of the method of ‘the journey’ to arrive at the destination. Thus, the vapour rising off of Ben, and the obvious wound on his arm.

I’m inclined to agree with dabiatchishere…or with the notion that Ben came from somewhere cold (possibly where he received the injury to his arm- by a polar bear?- not my idea so I can’t take credit).

I think Ben knew he was heading to Tunisia. He knew which way to the closest city and even had room waiting for him at the hotel. He probably has rooms like that all over the world. Remember the passports and various currency?

The parka i think has to be because of the transport process. I think Dharma used the polar bears in their experiments becuase of the bears high tolerance to cold. I guess they could have used penguins, but Sawyer shooting down a rampaging penguin wouldn’t look as cool.

Lateralus, Good thinking! One of the studies of Dharma, was to acclimatize polar bears to warm regions, away from their natural habitat. That is why the Polar Bears were on “the island”, initially.

Given this, what better way for Dharma and “The Others” to study teleportation than to successfully transport a polar bear into Tunisian desert and have it survive. Surely this might mean, that it could be possible for humans to do the same thing, or something along those lines.

Ben did not wear the coat intending to end up in a certain location.

Ben was wearing the coat because he was in the artic and “teleported” from the artic to the desert,

I say this because Ben was wounded through the coat,

And he wakes up shivering as he was in a cold enviroment before he teleported to the desert.

We are missing part of the story, we are showed scenes in ways that things look like they line up, just like when Jin was getting the panda for his friend or whatever but they made it look like he was getting it for his wife.

But, would he have asked about the YEAR at the hotel? and what was the deal with the lady’s face when she saw his name or profile or whatever she looked at? haha. im thinking that if he’s a preferred customer, hes been there a bunch of times. maybe she looked so shocked because of the length of time between his last stay and this present stay? maybe like 50 or 60 years had passed but on the island its only been a matter of minutes or days? lol, i dunno but kudos for that hotel keeping handwritten records. love it xo

    slayerphonics-

Ok, if Ben left the island, traveled (somehow) to the artic, found this teleporter station, got too close to a polar bear, and THEN teleported to to Tunisia, no only will i stop watching, i’ll go eat at Arby’s.

It seems much more “LOST” for there to be like, say… an Orchid station on the island. There was the Orchid logo and the name Haliwax on the parka. And even Haliwax(Candle, Wickman) is missing an arm in one of the orientation vids.

DUDE, what’s wrong with arby’s? 5 for 5.95—that’s like the greatest innovation in fast food—ever. Do you think the orchid could bring some Arby’s to the island?

I too believe that he knew where he would land, proof of that, is the passport that he has with him. He had lots at his room back onto the island, but he only had that one with him, cause it is the one he use in the desert, the one he has for that hotel, that room. I do not believe that he carries more with him. he is not that stupid. so the destination of his travel was known, the time of arrival was a mystery until he asked. I have a question: how did sayid know that someone was spying on him when he was carrying the coffin?
