With Time Travell being thrown into the latest series quite a bit, it looks like it plays a very important role in Lost. It also seem that after the last episode (The Shape of THings to Come), Charles Whitmore claims the island is his which means he obviously knows alot more about the island than we might have initially thought. Hence he sent a specific variety of people with such specific experties to the island. (Faraday, Miles etc).
With time travel in mind I think that all the stuff that Charles Whitmore had said and done to Desmond in the past was motivation to make Desmond a “Greater Man” and also in order to get Desmond onto the Island for some reason. This is also why he didn’t seem so reluctant to give desmond Penny’s address as he knew Desmond needed a constant and actually wanted to help him.

I think you’re right. Widmore needed to get his own man on the island, someone who enable the island to be found, with motivation (Penny) to return to the real world. In effect, he has Desmond there now, as his “inside man” , without Desmond even realizing it. Naomi had a Photo of Des, and she came from Widmores boat.
