“So Widmore funds DHARMA through the Hanso foundation. Therefore Widmore owns DHARMA.”

Ok
Although ‘The shape of things to come’ was a very action packed episode, I’m going to focus only on the bit at the end when Ben was talking to Widmore about the island. Probably the most interesting thing about that conversation was where we found out that Widmore was once in control of the island. So to narrow it down so I can come forth with the rest of my theory. So far we only know of four groups of people in control of the island.
The ancient civilisation that built the four toed statue, Almost impossible for Widmore to have once been in control of them, as there is no trace of them except for the statue and they probably died out hundreds of years ago.
The black rock crew, Not likley as Magnus Hanso, the captain of the ship would have assumed the position of leader, and Widmore is not related to the Hanso’s.
The Others/Hostiles, Ben and Widmore are enemies so I doubt that Widmore was once in charge. Also Jacob is the leader of the others and it seems that he has been there for decades. Also Widmore is a succesful buisness man to be a leader of the others he would have to be on the island and he would not be off the island to build up his buisness. Should I go on, I could, but I think you get the idea.
The DHARMA initiative, Ok i’m gonna list as many reasons as i can think of why Widmore was in control of the island. So The Hanso foundation funds the DHARMA but they are a small company and an experimental one, if Widmore corperations were to fund them then they would lose some of their (for lack of a better word) respect. So Widmore funds DHARMA through the Hanso foundation. Therefore Widmore owns DHARMA. (sorry this is a bit wordy). Exactly why Widmore wants to own DHARMA and the island, I dont know, but im sure theres a good reason.
The Purge
Every single DHARMA worker is killed in a matter of minutes, save for those in hatches and those who joined the others. The Hanso foundation is devastated and decides that It would be too long and hard and it would cost too much to money to get the DHARMA going again. But Widmore still does, he still wants the island and whatever he wanted to originally. But he’d no longer be able to fund them without the world knowing. According to Hugh mc something or other DHARMA was stopped being funded in 1987 presumably the date of the purge. Widmore now decides that he’ll send people to the island himself. He knows the bearing of how to get there but to his suprise he finds he cant locate it anymore. The island has moved. Widmore does several years of research and learns the name Benjamin Linus. Maybe he tracks him down on one of the occsions that Ben is off the island. As they seem to know each other. Widmore buys the journel of Tovard Hanso in 1996 in a Desmond flashback. (You may be asking how the others get to and from the island if it moves, well I think the anwer simply is that Ben knows the formula for where and when it moves) Eventually Widmore finds the island in 2004 and thats where we are now with Widmore outside the island and Ben trapped on there now.
P.S. Some of this theory is backed up from the lost experience which I looked up on Lostpedia. But I wont go into the details because theyre long and boring.
Thanks for reading, TheHolyStickman
How come i get the option to edit this, yet when i click the link to edit it says i can’t? (Not that i would xD)
i definitely like this theory! i especially like the part about Widmore funding dharma, it does explain a lot, and ben “stole” the island by killing the workers.
Lojozz I challenge you to a debate club arguement, a +10 post off, for the monarchy. I’m having trouble seeing if you accept or not, so just post it in a recent theory and if I see it we can get to buisness. I’ll explain what I’m challenging you on and what side i (hope) to take in the argument when you respond to this message.
