I have seen a couple of theories questioning Desmond’s talks with Charlie telling him that if he successfully pushes the button, then drowns, he sees Claire and Aaron boarding the helicopter. Yet as this has not happened yet and we have seen Aaron in flashforwards living with Kate, does this mean Desmond knew that Claire and Aaron would not leave the island together or did his flashes get confused?
We have seen how deeply in love Desmond is with Penny and it seems that he would do anything to be reunited with her again. Could this have caused him to instruct Charlie to die for a false cause? However, we see that when Desmond hears Penny’s voice he tries to get into the room and talk to her, which Charlie prevents by locking himself in. Also, i’m sorry if this has already been discussed, we have not seen Desmond give Claire the letter which was so touchingly written by Charlie. Could this be a sign of Desmond’s guilt and him not wanting Claire to know he knew Charlie would die? However, from the following episodes I am sad to guess that the writers simply could see no need to follow the Charlie story much further as both Claire and Hurley seem to be perfectly fine that their friend died a couple of days ago (apart from series 4 episode 9 in which claire mistakes Sawyer for Charlie in her confused and slightly- a house only fell on her head- state) Being a big fan of Charlie and especially his growing fatherly role to Aaron, i was also sad that the ring got abandoned at the beach and Aaron or Claire may never realise Charlie’s intention of Aaron receiving it as he had from his brother who had from his father. Hopefully they will return to the beach and find this! Also, and i’m not trying to spark any ‘Charlie’s not dead’ rumours- he looked fine with his hair cut on ‘the other side’! But i read on Lostpedia i think that Charlie wouldn’t have drowned because of the air pocket in the room he was in. I just found that interesting :) Anyway i’ve rambled on for long enough! What do people think will become of Charlie’s note and ring? And what were Desmond’s motives? Or was he simply confused as to what his visions meant? p.s- sorry for the pessimistic views on the reaction to Charlie’s death and s4ep9, i just didn’t feel it was one of the best island episodes after such a long gap!)

Charlies death was not in vain mate. Due to him they got in contact with the freighter!
I have always wondered why Desmond said Claire would get on a chopper. My guess was that it was the only way to motivate charlie into going through with it, while Desmond saw himself getting on a chopper (to the freighter)
But do remember that right before they dive, desmond decides to go. But Charlie knocks him out.
You simply forgot that Claire went with Locke to the Barracks, while Desmond stayed with Jack. In that moment when the whole group split there was no time for such emotional talk between Des and Claire.
But, as seen in the last episode, Claire is now on her way back to the beach, where she ´ll probably find Charlies ring in the cradle. If Desmond ever returns from the freighter, there will be space for a conversation between him and Claire, regarding Charlies death.
Besides, IMO the note wasn´t enough to call it a letter. Charlie only recalled his Greatest Hits in life. If somebody handed me such piece of paper, I wouldn´t be very attached by it. It´s just five points of someone´s memory - I wouldn´t bear no relation to four out of these five.
Back to Desmond: There are two options:
If his vision was true, he´ll have to return from the freighter, due to the fact that he can only watch Claire get on the helicopter as long as he´s present.
If he remains on the freighter, we will know, that he either lied about the vision or the future has changed. (But Faraday did say “You cannot change the fututre!”, didn´t he?)
Who cares? Charlie was a druggie, he would’ve died anyway.
It has bothered me that Claire so quickly recovers from the loss of Charlie. What’s with that?
Didn´t they all recover very quickly from any loss? Maybe Claire is just in denial? I don´t know.
Everyone overcomes a loss of a beloved person in his/her own way:
Jack just wanted it to be over when his dead father was found. Despite some hallucinations (or whatever that was) wherein Christian Shephard appeared to him he barely showed any grief. At the time he found the empty casket some sort of anger came into play. The wish that this chapter must be over in a definite and final way was all he wanted. Later then we see the grief. The first time he suffered noticably was when Sawyer talked about the conversation he had with Jack´s dad.
Shannon immedeately wanted revenge for her brother´s death. Her wrath was that great that she even considered to kill the person responsible (Locke).
Sayid had his emotional breakdown regarding Shannon´s death in front of a stranger (Ben, then known as Henry Gale).
Hurley blamed Michael rightly after he found out that he murdered Libby. But he did it in an unrude way. Not until some episodes passed by we witnessed Hurley´s sorrow when he visited Libby´s grave.
We must not forget that right after Charlie died major changes occured to all the Losties. The group split, strangers arrived, etc.
