It is becoming clear that the island has had many inhabitants over many hundreds if not thousands of years. Like the theories that the ancient Egyptians had vastly advanced technologies to help them build the pyramids, these ancient (four toed) inhabitants from the Islands past also developed powerful technologies that harnessed the islands powers, resulting in time travel, time shields, smoke monsters, immortality?
The Hyroglyph covered stone door behind Bens clothes rack leads to some sort of control room, where he clearly summoned the smoke monster from, possibly made his jump into the near future from and the controls are for the shield that hides the island. These ancient people hid the island from the outside world by harnessing the geomagnetic forces of the earth and creating a time distortion around the island, imagine if the island was hidden in this bubble back in the past by millions of years. The island would not visually appear to be there, as looking in from outside the bubble, back then there would probably be just ocean. The reason Charles Widmore cannont now find the island he used to own is that Ben seized the island with Richard Alperts group (Richard is probably a shipwreck survivor from the Black Rock) from the Dharma Initiative (a project funded by Widmore?) and changed the time the island is now hidden by an unknown timescale. The reason the island has been hidden in time from the rest of the world is to escape a nuclear war or cataclysm that will wipe out most of humanity in the modern world (see Vallenzetti equation). I think the temple is a place on the island where a limited number of people can go to escape this or maybe some kind of paradox (Faraday’s side effects) that will occur on the island when the modern world is destroyed. Clearly the original creators of these technologies did not succeed in escaping from thier cataclysm, because all that remains of them is a 4 toed statue and some of thier technologies. Whatever it is, there’s some crazy good stuff going on in this show.

I like the metaphor of the ark, but I’m not convinced this is what’s going on. The pilot was Seth who was the third son of Adam and Eve and father of Noah (though my biblical knowledge is a little rusty- someone correct me if I’m wrong!)
I like it but I was wondering. Those orignal inhabitants, have to use some sort of mechanical something to get a ‘shield’ around the island. And as far as we know Dharma is the one with all the stations here.
To fate: The Dharma stations I think, were placed on the island funded by a Widmore and Hanso collaboration to study the island. Clearly there is some sort of control for the smoke monster behind that very old looking glyph covered door, that does not look like any Dharma station. If the ancient inhabitants of the island could create something as technologically advanced as the smoke monster, then why not a time bubble / shield thingy?
Well if they made that bubble to protect the island. How did the Dharma initiative came to be on it?
And what exactly is the function of Dharma there then. Like with the doomsday button.
