Thanks!

This is more of a question than a theory, but is there anything to Hurley’s comment during the game of Risk (with Locke and Sawyer) in which he stated something like ~ “the key everything is Australia” ?

Yes there have been many theories on this already if you do a quick search. In me eyes in could mean one of two things:

    1) Nothing. Simply meaning that when playing Risk, Australia is very key to winning the game (which is true).

    2) In this so-called game between Ben and Widmore, Australia will play a major part in who wins.

Personally, I think it is 1. I think the writers were just messing with us with that line.

australia is the key to the whole game”

i think it means something. not sure what yet, but i think it is important to the show and to the ben/widmore thing.

Australia is not the key to the whole game. it gives hardly any extra men and if it comes down to the last place you have on the board, you have already lost.

He was talking about RISK. But, we, the audience, didn’t know that until later in the scene. It was a clever ploy by the writers to make us question what Saywer, John and Hurley were up to.

Surprise… they were playing a game.

To infer meaning to Hurley’s statement is to assume that Hurley has some special insight into the war between Ben and Widmore. I don’t think he even knows who Widmore is. I guess you could infer his comments to be a “clue” placed by the writers to give insight into the mythology of LOST, but I think that’s a stretch.

I haven’t played RISK in a long time. But I don’t recall ever feeling that Australia was very important to success. But I guess you can win Monopoly by being the slum lord, so who knows.

I have already had this discussion on another post so I won’t get into it too much. Australia is a vital continent in Risk. It is the easiest to take control over as it only has four territories. And once you have it, it is easiest to hold on to as it has only one access point through Siam.

This is opposed to a continent like Asia, which has 12 territories (or close to it) and four access points. So you can spend all game trying to get Asia, and once you get it people can attack you from four sides and eventually take it back. Trust me, I have played a lot.

This is why I think Hurley could have been talking about the game, and only the game. Because what he said was true.

That was the writers dropping you a hint of some kind - only I don’t have any idea what it meant.

I liked the part where Hurley and Sawyer are discussing the strategy also. I was the same way though when they were playing golf in season one. Jack and Michael were doing that close-up serious discussion thing and it turned out that it was about what club to use. Neat effect to lure us in but they did it twice, in reference to games. I personally don’t like the “its a game” theory, but this little tidbit does point in that direction;-(
