We know from previous episodes such as Juilette’s episode in which the others track her down and convince her to work on the island that the others can come and go as they please. However, in s04e09, Charles Widmore tells Ben that one of them must find the island again first.
Why can Ben not return to the island? He and his group have been able to do so before, i understand that there are no others left who would be with him and maybe it is a case of with no communication he cannot return. However i was wondering if it was something more complex, for example, the island has banished him? Maybe he could only return with the help of Hurley, who was the only one who could find Jacob and therefore Jacob may have given him an order (thus Charlie saying he could help the others)? (see sidewalkgod’s post for an interesting theory about Hurley) I believe the others are still alive and well on the island even after the oceanic six return.
EDIT Ok, so i got confused, they meant the search for Penny not the island!! It was late and i was confused about everything else going on haha. But i still reckon Hurley is the key to the oceanic six returning to the island if not Ben.

no… ben knows where the island is… he’s lookin for penny…they’re both hunting for something and that’s what Widmore meant by “I guess the hunt is on for both of us.” don’t worry i thought that at first too but my mom explained it to me!
Ben can get to the island, but Widmore cannot. I think it was clear in the Ep9 finale.
BTW, tomboy, I personally wouldn’t admit I need Mom to explain things in my life. Don’t mention that in a job interview.

I think you are on to something about Hurley being the key to returning to the island. He was the first to say they need to go back too, echoed by Jack. Jack even asked Hurley if he told anyone…..could he mean what I think Jacob is going to say? Hmmm…. Sorry LauLou…..I was going off on my own theory on your’s.lol.
