I was just reading Lojozz’s theory about Ben using a machine to teleport, and when I got to the part about Ben not releasing smokey earlier, I got to thinking.
Regardless of Ben letting it out, we know that no one has complete control over Smokey. That being said, we all believe that it is course correcting things, like killing the pilot because he wasn’t actually supposed to be there, leading people around by taking various forms, etc. But if Smokey is also the security system for the island, it is going to defend it against people who aren’t supposed to be there, regardless of whether or not it is course correction. So my thoughts are that Smokey killing people its not actually supposed to be could possibly be creating a paradox outside of the island’s “special time”. Not using Smokey is part of the rules because it complicates everything for everyone involved, because now they all have to run around trying to correct everything in outside island time. Widmore and Ben alike, because it could risk people finding out about the island. But when Keemy broke the rules by killing Alex, Ben didn’t care anymore and just wanted them dead. This could be one of the many reasons that Ben has workers on the outside and is constantly moving back and forth to accomplish his various goals. Sure he needs to keep having resources and keep Widmore/maybe other groups from finding the island, but he may also be continuously correcting errors made by Smokey. Finally, the markings on the wall Ben went through to “release” Smokey looked, to me at least, very similar to the signs that came up when the numbers weren’t entered into the computer. Could that have had some sort of effect on Smokey being released or being kept in that “chamber” thing? We saw Smokey when the plane crashed, and we know Des didn’t enter the numbers. We saw Smokey right after everything started shaking when Ben was in there after Locke was immobilized. Did Ben let it out? Did he enter the numbers or do something else?
This is all off the top of my head because I have to go and didn’t want to forget about it but hopefully it sparks some thought from the rest of you.
Oh and one final note thats probably a whole different theory….I think in classic Ben fashion, he actually may have had something to do with Nadia’s death in order to get Sayid onto team-island.
that is all.

I was thinking the same thing about Ben being behind Nadia being killed. +1
