I simply uttered WOW as I watched the final scene. The idea that Ben can just drop in on Widmore, literally with the key to his Penthouse sweet was an unbelievable revelation. It all sounds very much like two “former” friends or business “partners” and a business “arrangement” gone VERY awry.
Anyway, my observation from last night is this; we learned that C. Widmore (at least according to Ben) had Nadia killed. Sayid upon learning this news, offers to become and is now Ben’s personal international assassin hell-bent against all things C. Widmore. Ben and Sayid both want revenge and now Penny must die. Sayid and Desmond are friends (in 2004). Though we don’t yet know how, we have to believe Desmond will not only get off the island, but he will spend the rest of his natural life searching for Penny. We can also assume it to be highly probable that Desmond will regain his present, or 2004 memory at some point because his relationship with Sayid is gaining significance. We learned last night that Sayid’s quest to find Nadia was 9 years long and Sayid would have spent all of his natural life trying to find Nadia. He finally finds her, marries her and she is then killed by Widmore. Does not all of this point to a direct showdown scene with Sayid having to kill Penny?

Could Ben and Widmore have had a romantic relationship that went sour?

im not sure if sayid knows/made the connection between Widmore, Penny and Desmond. I think that Sayid will find Penny, reconize her from desmonds picture and not go through with the murder for Desmonds sake.
Ben completely manipulated Sayid into believing that the man who killed Nadia was one of Widmore’s people in order to get him to join ranks with him. I noted the sly smile on Ben’s face as he walked away from Sayid, once Sayid offered to be “his killing machine”. Ben got his man again, and made him think it was his idea!
I think it is safe to assume there will be a final showdown between Widmore and Ben, which will involve the plight of Penny, as Widmoresbutler mentions.
Sorry if my post was not clear. All I am suggesting is that in an as yet unknown point in the future, Sayid will be asked by Ben to kill Penny. I realize that the Sayid we see in 2005 flash-forward with Ben in Tikrit can’t possibly be aware of this when he decides to become Ben’s assassin. Penny’s name is not mentioned in the scene and the audience doesn’t learn of his intention to kill Penny until the final scene with Ben. My point is that at some point in the future of Sayid’s role as Ben’s personal assassin, Penny’s name will surface and Sayid will have to make a very difficult decision (assuming Ben is successful in ultimately locating Penny). Ben is completely setting Sayid up and once again manipulating someone else’s personal pain to work to his advantage. The smirk on Ben’s face was a “gotcha” smirk. He obviously set Sayid up and had every intention of doing once he saw his face on the television screen when he was checking into the hotel in Tunisia and realized Sayid was devastated and vulnerable. He knows Sayid believes in payback and now he has a hench-man who will do the all dirty work in the “real” world while he can confidently return to the island.
Still Sayid is aware of Demond’s feelings and relationship with Penny. So I do not believe that he would kill Penny as he would simply be doing to Desmond the unthinkable cruel act that was done to him. If Sayid gets that request then I am sure that Sayid would stop being Ben’s man and become his own man yet again.
