I own a copy of Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” and at the end of the book, there are advertisments for several other of hs novels. One os these is “Island”. It included a synopsis: (sorry I’m paraphrasing) there’s an Island in the South Pacific named Pala, where an advanced and equal civilization flourishes with unique technology. Then a person shipwrecks on the island. He’s so enamoured with the island, he contacts his boss, who is an oil tycoon. The Island has a huge oil reserve underneath it. The books centers around the greed that eventually destroys the people and the island itself. Aldous Huxley also wrote a partial screenplay entitled “Jacob’s Hands” about a young man named Jacob who lives, I believe, in New Orleans. He has a special gift: He can heal people. the story revolves his ability and the good and bad that comes with it including love and hate.
I was really struck with the similarties with these stories and “Lost”. Has anyone read the book “Island” or have a additional info?
Sounds very interesting…there are so many books and shows that tie into Lost that I wonder which ones they’ve actually read and are using.
Last night I was struck by how much Sawyer reminds me of Han Solo…they’re almost the same exact character.
Also, War Eagle!
“Pala” was on the dock sign when the four hostages were bound and Michael and Walt left on the boat, for what it’s worth.
Great connections. +1
Though LOST clearly isn’t based on anything, I love how it references tons of stuff.
Brave New World is a great book.
totally agree that huxley has inspired many elements of lost. i’ve read about 13 of “island” and saw many similarities. like the fact that there are acually 2 islands, the hindu inluence, and the struggle between conservation and exploitation.
i just read “ape and essence” and found it to be excellent.
huxley is the man!
what if all the injections that the others take are really a sedative like in “brave new world” to help ben control his society?
i just watched lules verne’s “mysterious island” and the resemblance is uncanny. i think that most of the superficial layer of the lost story is borrowed from this bookmovie.
