This theory is to add new ideas to a prior post regarding the undead issue.

I am not a superstitious person nor am I really a spiritual person, however I have been told that the way spirits communicate to psychics or mediums is through a different wavelength that only psychics can hear or see. Their senses for some reason are keen to these wavelengths, while the average person’s are not. I am going to go out on a limb and say these spirits are one in the same as what the writers refer to as UNDEAD.

I believe in the show LOST there are specifically two mediums or psychics that we have been shown OFF the island. The psychic who told Claire not to let her baby be raised by Others and Miles. I cant comment specifically on that Psychic with Claire, but we do know that Miles used a device that probably helped him pick up these wavelengths or frequency levels that the spirit was communicating with and because of which he was able to find the roll of money and the bag of drugs (or whatever that was).

I cant speak for the psychic on the island, but MIles used no such device on the island and he knew he didnt need it when trying to communicate with a dead Naomi. This tells me two things: Naomi’s undead self or spirit is lurking around and because of the islands unique properties, Miles was able to pick up on the wavelengths of communication with free of any device.

As we know Naomi’s spirit or undead self is not the first time we have been exposed to something undead. Kate’s horse, Jacob, Ben’s mother, Walt at times etc. There are obviously many manifestations and the bottom line is, without the islands unique properties, our losties would not be able to hear nor see them.

OK here is my theory: The smoke monster is the ultimate medium. It is specifically the catalyst of the spirit or undead world interacting through the islands properties to be able to communicate on a wavelength that is at a level where the islands living inhabitants can understand it. When smokey takes those close up pictures of peoples ideas (with Eko and Juliet), I believe smokey is also calibrating the wavelength level at which it can communicate with that specific person. This would explain the different, so called “hallucinations.” I also think the default form of the smoke monster is the actual smoke monster which is transmitting itself at a wavelength which can be seen and heard by everyone.

I think the Incident is when Dharma lost control of smokey to spirits or just Jacob. Perhaps when Ben trapped Jacob he relinquished power over it as well. I think Dharma knew the properties of smokie and what could stop it, like the psonic fence, because they were responsible for its conception. Doesnt it sound like Dharma to create a device that could communicate with the Undead or spirits? I think Dharma realized only too late that it couldnt be controlled.

Two questions: 1. Why did smokey kill the Captain and Eko? 2. Why did smokey try to bring John Locke underground in Season 1?

  1. The captain I cant speak for, we just dont know enough. As far as Eko goes, I think the spirit world is very anti religion and a very dogmatic way of thinking. I think Eko would have tried to destroy this medium because he would have considered it unholy and anti-christian.

  2. I think Smokey tried to bring John Locke underground because Smokey realized he has the ability to be a medium as well. We realize this when Locke hears and sees Jacob. I believe this is at least one of the reasons why he is special and the same reason for Ben being special.

OK those are my thoughts for now. Let me know what you all think…

MIFOTC, regarding your 2nd post, I’m not sure why no one commented on this, it could have just been oversight. You theory is well thoguht out and nicely presented, and interesting, so it’s likely not due to anything along those lines.

I agree that if there is really such a thing as psychics who can communicate with the dead, then the idea of their minds be open to other frequencies that enables this, makes sense.

I also believe there is something to the dead people connection to Smokey. Yes, Smokey is a security system built by Dharma, but crazy as it might sound, I think it’s possible that the memories and personality characteristics (some type of energy? I’m no physicist) that might otherwise move on or dissipate, are somehow trapped by or attracted to the island, and possibly combined with Smokey, maybe only sometimes or maybe all of the time.

Smokey might have been there but might not have been the current Smokey prior to Dharma. It could have been only the spiritual aspect, later given physical form by Dharma’s security system. Who knows, maybe the security system was invented to counteract the “undead” in the first place, and horribly backfired? That would have been a big surprise for Dharma.
