The course of true love never did run smooth!

— Obscure

The Boy-Meets-Girl formula goes ‘Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy regains girl’.

From the moment Kate sewed Jack up with standard black the expectation has been set up in us that all will end happily ever after with Jack and Kate, with a few barriers to the relationship thrown in along the way.

One of these barriers could be none other than ol’ Dimples himself, badboy cowboy Sawyer. Plus, Juliet has been thrown in the mix, as has a plane-crash on an island removed from the world by its unique temporal and spatial laws, just to complicate relationship matters! Oh well, the course of true love never did run smooth!

From reading the boards, there are Jack-Kate fans, there are Freckles-Dimples fans, there are probably even Jack-Juliet fans. Certainly Jack has got a strong rival on his hands with Sawyer- a popular and entertaining lovable rogue and the writers have got a challenge on their hands if they are going to disappoint large numbers of their fan base.

How do you want this relationship issue resolved and how do you think it will be? I forget who gave us the wonderful character assessment of Kate as the schoolgirl who was content getting Jack to do her homework whilst she very happily fraternised with the badboy smoking behind the bike-sheds. Who will Kate favour in the end? Or (I hesitate to suggest it!) will someone have to die to resolve this one?

Not my choice, but I think the writers are going to go with the predictable formula and have the hero (Jack supposedly) get the girl (Kate)

I truly thought the Sawyer/ Kate relationship was some great TV .

That was me who made that simplistic character assessment in someone’s thread (I don’t recall which). Glad you liked it. But to be precise about these people:

I think Kate is a murderer and manipulator who doesn’t understand what love is. I think Jack is an chemical dependent with serious emotional issues and a god-complex that prevent him from loving anyone who doesn’t worship him. While Sawyer has moments of emotional stability and kindness, it’s rare without securing himself with sarcasm or manipulation, therefore preventing any long lasting and serious relationship. And Juliet, though smart and resourceful, is a confused and codependent woman who needs powerful and dominant men to fulfill her sense of self-worth and purpose.

Kate will likely end up with Jack, though I’d be surprised if any combination of the four would last more than 3 months in an off-island relationship which required emotional maturity and real life responsibilities.

I say let them all die at the hands of the island so that Desmond and Penny can live happily ever after. I could care less about the other so called relationships.

Interesting, BillyGOat, though isn’t it the point that most of the characters are flawed individuals who have previously transgressed in the outside world? The island is giving them a second chance to redeem themselves or not. We are but halfway through the series- surely these characters are currently in the middle of experiences which will test them to extremes and eventually teach them valuable lessons about what is truly important? With no internal conflicts there would be no drama! Witnessing Jack falling from his god-complex pedestal and getting Kate to stay put rather than running, dammit, are two of the many reasons to keep watching!

And I love Obsures verdict :) although I thought Kate had reached a character defining/ changing moment when she climbed back into the cage in Every Man For Himself _effectively accepting imprisonment for the good of the group (Sawyer/Jack)which I felt went against everything we knew Kate could handle

Kate suffers from hero comlex as much as sawyer, jack, and sayid do.

My take: Sawyer ends up with Juliet on the island. Jack, depressed in the real world, wants to go back to the island to reclaim the woman who really loved him. Kate has no interest because she now has a child (Aaron) and a new man (?), but Jack regrets his decision.

look, I am giving YOU a chance to redeem yourself, becasue all, and I MEAN all your posts fall into the following categories:

    Rehashed from others

    Boring

    Meaningless

come up with an original idea

you wanted to know about the human behaviour, but really, it is ME, who wants to know………wants to know what sort of human behaviour is it to write the same old crap over and over and NOT expect people to tell you it is CRAP!

you have made the odd reasonable point, but my grandmother can do that, and she is 93 with no teeth and lost her marbles a long time ago, and you are on a par with her intellectually!

Hows therapy been? it obviously has not been enlightening otherwise we would all see a huge shift in the quality of your posts, and of course, we have not!!

I will say one thing in your defence……you are not the worst on this site, that award goes to island_bound, but you are a very very close second!
