The Others, rather Ben and Juliet, appear to not know what the island’s monster is, so from that we can assume (unless they are lying and if we agree the black was ‘manufactured’ rather than a natural occurrence on the island), it’s creation pre-dates the arrival of DI.
So it seems that the black smoke was created before DI was on the scene, and also that infrastructure existed on the island prior to their arrival to.
I was wondering who you guys thought created the monster, and the Cerberus vents that were constructed to release it?
Was it the hostiles and, if so, where did they gain the technology and building materials to do this?
JLL The DI was around long before Ben and Juliet so i think it is still very possible that they are responsible for the smoke.
AngeloComet wrote a good theory about the fence that discusses smoke quite a lot. Its well worth a read. http://lost-theories.com/theories/2008/apr/16/dharma-facilities-sonar-fence/
Thanks for the link - Angelo’s posts are really well written and thought-out - always good to read.
However, he does seem to believe that the smoke monster existed prior to DI’s arrival on the island, and it wasn’t, I don’t know, the result of an experiment of their’s that went wrong or what-not.
If that’s correct, why do these ‘cerberus vents’ exist? By Inman and Radzinsky describing them as ‘vents’ as oppose to holes ect, this implies they were contructed and not natural - so some building work - some ‘infastructure’ - existed on the island before DI turned up?
The cerberus secrutiy system along with the vents as part of it was built by someone, if it wasn’t DI, who?
Or am I just confusing myself lol?
JLL I’m not sure why you think the ‘vents’ could not have been built by Dharma. They (it would seem) built all the other facilities on the island.
Because I just assumed that the smoke and the vents where built at the same time.
I suppose it could be two things.
The vents were either part of a security system that exited before DI turned up.
Or,
The vents were built by DI in attempt to somehow control it’s release maybe.
JLL - I do discuss the idea the Black Smoke was around before Dharma got there as a possibility in my post - but ultimately I leaned towards the idea that Dharma were the most likely candidates to have produced it (either by deliberate design or, more likely, as an offshoot of an experiment that went wrong).
The fact they built a custom Sonic Fence to perfectly repel the Black Smoke suggests intentional design to me. That there are also ‘vents’ further suggests man-made infrastructure.
First of all, Ben was lying about not knowing what the smoke monster was. I also believe the smoke monster was created by the Dharma Initiative, which eventually suffered from a catastrophic malfunction. Perhaps the black smoke was manually controllable as well?
Is there any reason to suggest that the ‘smoke monster’ is somehow connected to the cerberus vents? These vents could simply be steam vents to release the pressure that would gradually develop in a system that uses steam (we have seen the steam piping beneath the Swan when Jack and Sayid investigate the blocked up wall). Steam venting would also be controled and condense. This condensing, if large enough and under the right circumstances could easily produce rain at known intervals, allowing people who know this to predict rain (Locke). I just think we may be making the assumption the writers want us to when we assume the cerebus is affiliated with the smoke monster. I think the writers regularly make general or misleading implications, the audiance confers the wrong a wrong assumption, and the writers don’t try to clear up the misunderstanding, but rather use it to their advantage to make a mystery even more confounding. Just a thought.
