KATE: Why did you call me, Jack? [Jack hands her his newspaper clipping] JACK: I was hoping that you’d heard. That maybe you’d go to the funeral. KATE: Why would I go to the funeral?

Ok, so the question that has been bugging me for a while is, “who is in the coffin” or “who’s funeral was it?” I wish they had revealed this in Through the Looking Glass, but of course, as always, they had to keep us guessing. I think I have figured it out.
Remember, when Jack first read the newspaper article, he was really bummed? Well of course if it was Julliet, he would be bummed, (they were kind of cozy, romantically involved, etc…) Remember also, he asked Kate if she would go to the funeral, and Kate said, “Why would I want to go to the funeral?” Well, Kate was always jealous of Julliet and Jack’s relationship so, it would be kind of obvious that she wouldn’t want to go. Anyway, thats what I think and I would like it if people could discuss this further…

Its Michael. Why would she want to go to his funeral? If u look at the top of the paper its New York paper. He is the only one from New York.
If there has been 1 thing that LOST has been consistent with, its the songs they play within scenes, The song pertaining to this scene is “Scentless Apprentice” by Nirvana, I think this song has alot of meaning to this scene. My rational leads me to believe its Ben in the Coffin, Ben was a Scentless Apprentice who was selected without his knowledge at the time by the island to eventually be groomed into the goto guy for Jacob/Island. All the Songs played in this show relate to the scene heavily, So i really don’t think this is any different. A line in the song is “You can’t fire me because I quit” I can see something to that accord happening between Jacob and Ben when Locke’s time comes. Rather then accept defeat, he would sooner retreat or quit.
I really don’t think it’s Juliet. Main reason being her sister loved her and she would have attended the funeral!
I agree with Kelac…Juliette was part of a community before she left for the island. She had a sister, co-workers probably old college buddies and (we can assume) family. Somebody would have showed up at her funeral
Its Ben in the box.
It’s not a New York paper it’s the L.A. Times and a “Man” was found.
A few more coffin theories and we will have reached our goal of one million.
The point is, we have to work out if that flashback scene with the funeral is before or after the scene with Sayid and BEN! If it is after, then ok, it could Ben, maybe Sayid killed him. (lol) But if it’s before, then it can’t be Ben.
Midnight, I think you meant flashforward not flashback, and yes that would make sense, but I think it is the consensus that the first flashforward we see in TTLG is the also the furthest in the future taking place in April of 2007.
