I believe everything on this show will have a logical explanation. So…
I believe when Michael and Tom were wrestling in the alleyway, that Tom switched Michael’s gun with a faulty gun.
Tom said the ‘island won’t let you kill yourself’, but I think it’s that the Others are making sure Michael won’t kill himself. They are keeping tabs on him, after all…
Notice when Michael went to shoot himself later, he checked the gun and there were 6 bullets in it. He shot at Tom earlier in the alley, and we did not see him reload that last bullet (why would he need to?). SO, where did that 6th bullet come from? It must be that Tom handed him a fully loaded, faulty gun.
I also believe the Others knew MIchael was giong to try to run his car into a wall, and I think they tampered with the car. I don’t believe it was going as fast as Michael thought.

How would Tom know what exact handgun with the exact same grip to bring with him?
I’m not saying the gun wasn’t switched, but the bullet evidence is not indicative of the guns being switched. The gun was a revolver and would have still had all shells in the chamber until they were cleared.
I’m not so sure everything will have a logical explanation. Maybe you are right, but there does seem to be something almost supernatural about the island and I’m not sure that is logical.
How can a man who cannot walk and is paralyzed, all of a sudden walk again? How does the island cure cancer? That does not seem logical to me. Seems like more of a miracle, but again, I could be wrong.
I agree with Tracker. Also the shell casing would stay in the gun just like TDurden said. Just seems too unlikely for me. Someone else posted this same thing not long ago & almost word for word comments were given on that post.
yeah I completely disagree with this theory. I’m not sure how tom saved micheal from the head on collision.
AGAIN with the switced gun?!?!?!?
Ok, if the idea that the island dosen’t have any “miraculous” or extradordinary properties works better for you when you watch the show, then enjoy.
In the show we have been given the two terms ‘man of faith’ and ‘man of science’. I believe that there are some logical rational possible explanations for some of the things that we have seen including the possibility that the gun was switched or that Michael was just lucky not to have been more injured in the car crash. Some people do have miraculous escapes from car accidents.
However
I do not think that there are going to be logical ‘scientific’ explanations for everything on the show. The apperances of ‘taller ghost Walt’ and the appeance of Kate’s black horse all seem to move toward a science fiction explanation.
Desmond’s consciousness travelling also seems to be much more easily explained by accepting that this happens to Desmond rather than expecting some scientific rational explanation.
Then we have Jacob’s cabin which seems to have a unique feature in such a renovator’s delight, it can vanish. This is a handy feature when you want some quality home alone time but I am not sure that the world’s best builder’s would be able to build you such a cabin. Does anyone want an explanation like it must be a hologram, and yet we know that the cabin is solid as when Locke first went in.
So Des, Man of Science, many things will be given some sort of rational logical explanation and others will be based more in fantasy than in reality. Others I am sure will be left ambiguous, like the reason why Michael did not die in the car crash.
Someone with incredible foresight, somehow knew that Michael would use his car to attempt suicide, so they somehow did something to his car so that it would appear to be going faster than it was, and that the driver would not be aware of this. Maybe they blunted all sharp knives and razor blades in his house in case he intended to do harm to himself that way. Or the other middle option is as said before he just had one lucky escape from a car aciident that could have killed him. Or maybe Tom is right and the island wont let him die … yet.
My guess is that in the car accident, Michael was just lucky. The rest of the mysteries will depend on where you stand on the faith/science continuum.
A interesting thread that raises some fundamental concepts of the show.
+1
Good point Stitch, it might just be left to the viewer to decide. Of course, Des, I do disagree that everything in the show will have a logical explanation, with reasons stated above by others, but your theory that the gun was switched could be valid.
OK, so with a 6 shooter the bullets don’t pop out, but none of those bullets had any kind of indents that indicated that it had been hit by a pin. There’s also the creepy factor of the pawn shop clerk, seems Micheal’s may have been expected. Plus, how did Tom know exactly where Micheal would be; the ally right next to the pawn shop?
Tom did get his hands on that gun and he did have opportunity to do a slide of the hand. Tom and Ben have worked together to manipulate Micheal since the beginning. They knew they could talk to him on the hatch computer and they knew he would buckle if they created a situation for him in which he thought he had no choice. Micheal wants his son, so they use that. Micheal wants to die, they use that too. Ben and Tom just know Micheal enough that if they can convince him that they are the only path to getting what he wants, Micheal will do what they want.
“If you want X, we can get it for you, but you must first do Y for us.”
+1 from me.
Good points Lost_Dbutz. I don’t know about that car crash tho, I think maybe it was for real and by luck he happened to survive it. That could of alerted Ben and Tom to his intnetions tho and guessing what he might do next.
I agree ‘des is hot’ I seriously want that man’
I’m undecided on the gun/bullets thing - I just don’t know whats going on there Des.
