This afternoon I inadvertently read an unmarked spoiler contained in another posting on this site.
Although it may well turn-out to be incorrect, like a lot of the viral hear-say circulating the web, I can’t help but theorise about its implications should it be true.
I stumbled across this post earlier today and if, like me, you feel that spoilers taint the enjoyment of watching Lost as it naturally progresses, please stop reading now.
Apparently, there is an up-and-coming Locke-centric episode, in which we are shown Richard Alpert being present at John Locke’s birth.
Locke, from the beginning, has always been a fascinating and important character in the show – and his affinity with the island undeniable. Could it be that John Locke is a descendant of its native inhabitants?
Birth, for whatever reason, is not possible on the island. This could be due to a weird natural paradox (not a bona fide ‘paradox’ as such, but it seems to be the best word to describe it).
The islanders live forever themselves – but they are unable to procreate.
They have made unsuccessful scientific attempts to resolve this through the recruitment of Juliet and her experiments with on-island birth.
But the more logical resolution would be to make sure that conception, and birth, took place off-island and then to bring that new born back.
We all know that Locke’s mother believes that he was born via ‘immaculate conception’ and without any involvement of a father, but I speculate that she was artificially inseminated by the Others and that her pregnancy was by no means ‘immaculate’ but intentional.
Why they didn’t just return with Locke immediately after his birth to the island, and whether or not John’s mother was in cahoots with the whole process or completely unaware I’m not sure.
He obviously holds great reverence with the others. This may be that his status as a genetic descendent, possibly the first, is of great importance. Is it’s though they have been waiting for him to arrive.
I believe the reason they asked Locke to kill Cooper and to ‘speed up the process’ (of acceptance as the ‘one’) as Richards puts it, was to demonstrate that there was no biological connection between the two of them and to confirm that he was ,in fact, the guy they were looking for. It would take too long to tangent into a ‘time’ hypothesis now but essentially, if we assume the island exists not in the future, past or present time but in an ‘all time’ sense, then by killing his father he would no longer exist himself. This obviously didn’t happen.
I’ve not expressed this theory very well. I’ll elaborate on it more when I’ve got the time – there’s other ‘evidence’ contained within the show that I think points towards the above being credible. But for now I thought I’d just get it out there.
Nice. Maybe they wanted Locke to kill his dad as some kind of symbolism to show he severs his ties to the world off the island. If Richard Alpert was there for Lockes birth then it looks for sure that Lockes mom was was made pregnant by them. I got a question tho, why would it have to be artificial insem ? How about Jacob? If he’s like part there and part not there then would she see him like a devine spirit or something like that? Isn’t that how Mary got Jesus?
Just another piont I’d like to make about this theory. Could it be that becuase Locke was not returned to the island starightafter birth, his presence in the real-world had a knock-on, ‘butterfly’ type effect.
We know that in some way most, or all, of the charchters pasts are interlinked. Could it be that Locke was the first flap out the butterfly’s wings that caused lives of the other Losties to be changed and fate is now correcting itself. Firstly by returning Locke to the island and secondly by correcting any events that have occured as result of his birth. Locke was the begnining of a chain of events that were never mean’t to be.
yeah, well, basically, all hte losties are descendents of the “others” or “hostiles” and “fate” has brought them back home.
Christian Shepherd or Jacob has a line about bringing the family back together again or somethign?
Hi Rimland,
Do you think that the Losties are descendants of the ‘natives’, or where you agreeing in a tongue in cheek kind of way?
What’s this about a line brining the family back to together again? Sounds interesting.
Maybe Locke couldn’t kill his father because the rules of the island state you can’t kill family members and he actually IS Cooper’s son.
