In essence, Locke was created to fulfill some essential role on the Island.

I think Locke was created by the Island with a very specific purpose in mind. We know from spoilers (Lostpedia) that in an upcoming Locke-centric flashback, Richard Alpert is present at Locke’s birth. Locke’s mother, although thought to be crazy, told him that he was immaculately conceived.
I think that Emily Locke was impregnated by the Island (okay, before you bash me…..not physically by the Island itself, i did take Biology g) through implantation or by somehow using the Man from Tallahassee for It’s purposes. In essence, Locke was created to fulfill some essential role on the Island. I think Ben believes, or was lead to believe that this role was his and that is why he tried to kill Locke. I am still struggling with the “who are the Good guys” question so I am not sure where to go next with this theory…. any ideas??

i think ur definatly on the money with this +1… i didn’t know these little spoilers and to be hoinest they’ve got me excited… i think the question of ‘who are the good guys’ will be set up really soon, possibly at this ‘locke’ episode.
i like ur thoughts on ben thinking that ‘he’ is the chosen one, and ‘locke’ being there has put ben’s role under pressure… very good stuff
I like this theory. I recently rewatched season 1, and pondered about it myself when Locke’s mother talks of him being immaculately conceived.
However, later in the episode, we learn that Emily was paid by Cooper to tell Locke exactly what he needed to hear in order for Cooper to get his kidney transplant signed and sealed. Could Emily have been telling the truth though? Who knows.
+1 though, as i said… i like this theory.
KK I think you may have something. I would suggest you add in your title that this contains spoilers as there are poeple who don’t know (and don’t want to know) some of this.
Thanks for the spoiler information
Don’t forget, Locke’s mom disappeared for some time, and was institutionalized…then showed up and told Locke’s dad that she had had a child and given it up for adoption (an adoption which never happened - Locke bounced around in foster homes all his life). This may help explain some of his story, too. I never hear anyone mention these facts!
By the way, I didn’t write that clearly. She disappeared, did the pregnancy/birth/adoption thing, then later was institutionalized at some point. I think that is the order in which they occurred!
Its a fairly safe bet that Cooper is Locke’s father though, otherwise wouldn’t the kidney reject?
Can’t you get a kidney from anyone who is a match? I know a blood relative is the best match, but when my mother-in-law passed away, her kidneys went to anonymous people. I don’t know if they were rejected or not, but they got them initially. But, on the other hand, wasn’t there a DNA match between Locke and his father? I guess it could’ve been faked. I don’t know!
Lojozz, I’ve never thought about this before, but it just occurred to me. My mom needed a kidney transplant a couple of years ago and they wouldn’t let any of us kids give her one of ours because there was a good chance we would inherit the same kidney disease that she has. So maybe this is proof that Locke ISN’T Cooper’s son? But I don’t know what was wrong with Cooper’s kidneys… maybe it wasn’t disease related. Does anyone know?
Please edit your title with the word “spoiler”. Not everyone, including myself, wants to know this information in advance.
Lyra - I’ve never heard that before, I hope your mom made a good recovery.
So_Lost yeah your right it just needs to be a ‘good’ match. I always thought that it was too much of a stretch for Cooper to have found Locke, who so badly wanted to get to know his father and at the same time was a good match for his kidney. But as I just wrote that I realised we are dealing with Anthony Cooper master con man so perhaps, it was just con pure and simple.
That said would he not have shuck John off a lot easier after taking his kidney by telling him that?
WTF put “spoiler” in your damn title…now this is ruined for me thanks!
A big+1 from me although the comment about Richard being present at the birth is just a guess. (I read the spoilers and it does seem right though.)
Probably should edit and add spoiler in your theory title kitterkatter :)
Maybe Cooper didn’t need Lockes kidney he just needed Locke to have the kidney removed that would eventually cause his death when Ben shot him. Maybe the transplant was another con?
wtf..would that be the ultimate long-con?
we are the good guys
wtf thats just too far!
We all know Ben is the good guy ( :
Emily Locke insane - or just “traveling” thus appearing to be insane to the rest of the world. Like when Desmond flashes to bootcamp and his superior thinks he is crazy… I do think there is much more to Emily Locke than we have learned so far. Maybe Widmore is the Man from Tallahassee? Maybe Widmore was the captain of the Black Rock and Emily was on board… Lots of possibilities!
Didnt she say that his “father” came to her eith money to lie to him and tell him that he was his father?
Emily Locke is Ben’s mother who’s also called Emily. Come on, it’s too much of a coincidence that the two known island leaders both had a mother called Emily who they never saw.
